Hi all,

I own a iMac late 2012 and still on Yosemite and I want to update to El Captain.... but my friends are saying
"not necessary" because El Captain is only for laptop users... al the new things are for battery, screens savers etc.
Stay on Yosemite!
True?

Regards,

Most of El Capitans impairments are under the hood, since you use Yosemite it makes sense to upgrade at some point. Given the number of bugs (Mail, Preview, Safari, Disk Utility, Finder, etc.) in current version I recommend waiting 2 or 3 updates before installing El Capitan.

Currently Metal is not supported by most software so it will take some time before its full potential can be used.

Some have compared El Capitan to Snow Leopard but personally I am not impressed with Yosemite or El Capitan, I am hoping Apple abandon its yearly schedule and keeps updating El Capitan for 2 years... Then it might be as good Snow Leopard was.

I don't know! But he was talking about less power draining via the screen of the laptop and energy saver... One friend was also talking about quicker working on the laptop an less on a desktop (I think Mac Pro) and iMac.

My friends are regular misinformed

And I will use that hint for waiting for one or two upgrades before installing it!

Maybe that splitsceen is useful here!

Thx you all

Definitely wait on Apple to release further updates the current .0 release is far from ready for the public IMO. Worst upgrade I have ever seen with OS X, too many issues, even with Apple`s own software...

btw add Preview to the list...

That's the only major bug I'm experiencing. I'm trying to read a 123 page PDF that's only 5.6MB in size, but Preview has randomly froze 5 times since last night and I have to force quit it.

EDIT: Just froze again! And I'm already in a bad mood, so when I get that beachball I'm like...

Get`s better, a 2.4Mb 15 page pdf grows to several gigabytes by just scrolling through it a few times, if I leave multiple pdf`s open for reference the memory footprint becomes colossal. The more you scroll, or interact with the pdf the memory consumption grows exponentially. Seriously Apple needs to fix this nonsense prior to release and stop releasing a "half baked" OS`s on the general public. Preview has been "broken" for several years and clearly remains to be so...

A single 2.4.Mb pdf grows to this in 10.11.0 in minutes  Apple simply fails to impress me these days with OS X I find it totally ridiculous that moving to 10.11.0 breaks Apples own "Mail" application with the only solution to reconfigure all the accounts...

I can really empathise how you feel, when 10.11.0 screwed up my mail, on Apple`s own "Mail" application I was just...

Shall we say a more than a little incensed.........

Luckily, I haven't had any issues with Mail for my iCloud and school Gmail account, but I have had the Finder crash twice.

And YES! Just scrolling through my PDF caused a slow down and I looked in Activity Monitor and say that Preview was sucking 2.45GB of RAM! I use this program everyday! Right now, I have had two small PDFs open for about 30 minutes and this is what Activity Monitor is telling me.

After 7 or so betas and Preview is still broken? This has been my attitude towards Apple for the past year or so:

Truthfully I am at a point, that if the next rMBP update is more of the same "awesomeness" I am willing to give Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 a shot, as all I know that own/use the Surface Pro 3, have nothing but good words for it, more so now with Windows 10. Nor are these guy`s that interested or invested, to coin a phrase "it just works"

I forgot Preview, when I tested it on El Capitan after release I noticed similar problems as others have reported and I have no idea why Apple decided to release El Capitan way too early...? Previously I waited 2 or 3 updates before installing new OS but after my experiences with 10.10 and 10.11 it seems prudent to wait until 4 update.

Easy answer sales & marketing, prioritises customer satisfaction Apple is about only one thing now $$$$. I find their greed staggering at times, premium price I fully expect premium service...

Those screenshots are completely meaningless. Memory is there to be used and any proper OS will use it. Any proper OS will also turn things down a notch when memory isn't available in heaps. As long as performance is good, memory pressure is fine (green) and it works stable you needn't worry. I see a lot of people here who need to update their IT knowledge to 2015 instead of still living in the 90s. Even Windows now takes full use of the memory and task manager will therefor show "high" memory usage by apps so going Surface Pro 4 will give you the very same memory usage results as with OS X.

And AirDrop...when did that ever work properly? They need to start getting that up to a reliable level.

AirDrop worked fine for me prior to 10.11. Work on your own knowledge a 2.4Mb file resulting in over 3GB of memory usage is far from normal. It represents nothing more than poor programming, as there is absolutely nothing beneficial in this behaviour, it will only result in excessive "paging" ultimately degrading performance. Utilising all available RAM to accelerate the OS performance is a completely different matter.

It common knowledge that Preview has had issues for some time now, nor is Apple any closer to fixing it...

Like I said, that's how it worked in the 90s. It's not how it works now. And most definitely not with files like PDFs due to their very nature.

You also fail to answer the basic question here: what is the problem exactly? Does it have degraded performance in the app? Do other things not work? Does it increase the memory pressure? How does this compare to memory usage on other platforms such as Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and so on? How does it compare to other applications such as Skim, PDFPen, Adobe Reader, etc.?

Or in other words: where exactly is the information where we can actually draw any conclusion other than "the given information is absolutely useless"?

It amazes me you are angry about memory usage from Preview yet the fact that in one of the screenshots there are two (no not one, but two...the horror!) processes for this forum each consuming 110+ MB of memory goes completely unnoticed! Not to mention kernel_task consuming almost abusing 850MB of memory. Nothing should ever use memory, memory has to have 0% usage because you buy stuff in order to not ever use it since using it would be a complete waste of money o_O

You want low mem usage? Don't use PDFs! They are a memory hog on any system and they are far far far faaaaar worse when you print them. Watch the memory usage and the spooler. It is like Jacks beanstalk...huuuuuuuuuuge.

Get out of here with that. There is literally zero reasons to stay on Yosemite unless you like more bugs, lag and less performance, I mean a lot less performance.

Don't use PDF`s  answer of the year. Is simply sloppy programming, and will ultimately degrade performance, as it`s not going to be the only application running on the system. So obviously memory pressure rises, once past a certain point performance is degraded.

What I and others are unhappy about is Apple, is cutting quality for sales & marketing, 10.11 has brought a lot of issue for some. I can get it if we are talking about third party software & hardware pending updates, however when Apples own applications are the issue something is fundamentally wrong.

I was asking you to provide proof for your claims, to show where the actual problem is. Since you are unable to do so we'll have to assume you're lying and trolling.

Btw, postscript is even more fun than PDFs.

I guess that`s the whole point of it; 10.10 never gave me any issue, yet 10.11 is problematic, equally vice versa for others. All being equal we should all have the same upgrade experience, barring third party software & hardware. Obviously this is not the case. I may do a clean install, however this is time consuming versus rolling back to 10.10.5
