So today we had a smart meter fitted and for the first time I grasped how much power my classic macpro is using vs my M1 !

With it off we use about 4p an hour and with it on about 11p which equates to over 600 pounds a year

In contrast my M1 uses about an extra 1p an hour rather than 7 !

I leave my cMP on permanently as I/ my family use Plex (the cMP has 16TB of internal drives) but I could keep meaning to migrate solely over to the M1 but just keep putting it off but this is spurring me on big time....

If I migrate wholly over to the M1 and attach my Crucial SSD external drive to it can I run Plex happily from it even when its in sleep mode ?

Actually I see this

"No, whatever's running Plex has to be on and not asleep in order to play content. The screen can be off, but it still have to be awake."

So I could use something like Amphetamine to keep it awake...

I use my Mac Studio as a file server and it's mostly to upload and download video, audio, OS installations, and PDFs. It's also used for streaming videos. It does sleep - when another device makes a request while it sleeps, it wakes up and is generally ready to serve files in about 18 seconds. When it's not asleep, it responds in 1-2 seconds.

The Studio does wake on access so wouldn't this also work for Plex?

For Plex server, it might make sense to get an NAS. I have a Synology stowed away in the cupboard -works like a charm.

I have an external 4 bay Western Digital NAS (4 x 10TB drives) that is used for my Plex media....and a 2018 Mac mini as the Plex server and works perfectly for my needs.
