I live in a new 3 stories condo building with an elevator and I plan to purchase an iPhone 12 or, maybe, a pro. I would like to know if
MIMO 4x4 could possibly make a difference between bad reception and acceptable reception in elevators. No way to know since I won’t have a phone until iPhone 12, hence cannot do any testing...

Thanks.

This depends on a lot of factors e.g. at my work place my 11 Pro Max works generally well in our mostly glass elevators that are moving above ground, however once I get into the metal basement elevators then signal can completely drop the further down we go and only comes back once I step out the elevator.

So are the elevators in your building going to a deep underground parking lot? Are you in a mountainous area? That may all play into it.

Do you really need to use a phone in an elevator?
Yes! You know why? Because I am claustrophobic. Just the idea of being trapped in an elevator spins my heart to
150 beats per minute...
I’m so claustrophobic that I don’t even thrust the emergency phone in our elevator. And it’s a new and modern building with the last techs.
And before you ask me why I don’t use the stairs, well I did... but I had a major operation in last January and I should not force myself until September according to my surgical specialist.

It depends on the elevator, but most are metal boxes in concrete shafts which pretty effectively block out cellular signals. If your current phone doesn't work in your elevator, it's a highly doubtful that a newer model would either.

If you are trying to use your phone as a distraction, you could well get apps that do not need an always-on internet connection. You may fire up an e-book PDF or maybe even Kindle if you use it, and just read away. Or, download some videos on your phone to watch while in the elevator, or download music on your phone to listen to.

However, if you must be on a call with someone while you are inside an elevator, you need to talk to doctors, they would know how to help you around this particular scenario.

Take the stairs, it’s better for your health. Best part is you don’t have to stand in a vertical coffin lol. I’ve seen Final Destination a few times 😏

If it’s a new and modern building, somebody will have done a site survey on the building that may have included the elevator area.

I did an office move last year and commished a survey. We already knew mobile coverage was very poor on the whole of the 11th floor, so did a wifi survey to ensure full coverage. This includes a search for conflicting signals (inc radio and wifi from other floors) so it’s highly likely someone in building facilities can get hold of this survey for you.

As has been said, there are far too many factors for anyone here to answer your question about a specific building. General statements may hold true, but buying a new phone just for this is high risk.

So far, the discussion seems to center on cell reception.
I wonder if that can (mostly) be improved by a wifi access point inside the elevator shaft. Shouldn't be too challenging with only 3 floors, with a greatest distance maybe 10 or 15m. The AP might even be placed inside the elevator car.
