I just read the pdf on boygenius and noticed something interesting. On page 51 it mentions that purchasing an iphone will NOT affect upgrade eligibility. It didn't go into too much detail, but if you are eligible for an upgrade now and buy the iphone....does that clause on pg 51 mean that you will still be eligible for an upgrade post iphone?

It should, upgrades are subsidized phones. The iPhone is full price from Apple or AT&T. So it doesn't affect your ability to get an AT&T phone for a family plan or something with an upgrade.

damn i just bought a razr thinking i wouldn't be able to use my upgrade later... back to the at&t store.

I'm guessing the iphone purchase extends it to 2yrs.....and then when you purchase another phone on the upgrade (same line) it extends it 2 yrs from that date?

I still don't get it.

I currently have an account with AT&T and I still have 12 months remaining on a 2 year contract. I would like to buy an iPhone and use the same line or do I have to get another line?

If I have to get another line, can I combine them and have a family account with one regular phone and an iPhone.

I don't want to be that person in line all day, and then when it is my turn I can't decide...

I called AT&T and they have no idea...

It's alarming, but not at all surprising ATT drones still have no clue. I'm going down there with a packet of info in case there is an issue.

You can buy an iPhone regardless of your current contract.

From visiting a couple of at&t stores and apples stores, here is what I am getting.

If you are in a contract it just extends it two years when you sign up, since they aren't subsidizing the price of the phone.

So for the people who want to shave a couple of bucks off the price of the iphone, here is what I am going to do. Since my contract is up, I will resign up at AT&T for a subsidized phone (treo 750 or a blackberry pearl). Sell that one on ebay for 200 more (refurb pearls are only 50 or so, sell for 250) and use that toward the iphone purchase. Confirmed it would work with an AT&T manager.
