Hi, I have one email address that I use as my apple ID. It is personal@gmail.com

I am wondering...to use iCloud, specifically the Mail, Contacts, Calendar...

I need to create a @me.com address?

And this @me.com address is like a normal email account, on top of all the features of icloud?

Sure, but you don't have to use it. You can just turn it off in iCloud settings.

To use iCloud mail it seems you have to use an @me account.

to use the rest of the features, gmail is fine. My apple id is a gmail username as well, but for some reason my @me address keeps on saying wrong user name/password and the online feature isn't working.

Well what if I want to use Contacts and Calendars?

I use Google Calendar since it's with my gmail account, but I can't use it with iCloud since it's not a @me.com address?

iCloud uses your AppleID, which you signed up for using your gmail account as your ID. All features of iCloud will use that AppleID. If you want to use iCloud for mail, you will choose a @me address for your Apple supplied mail. If you don't want an @me account, simply don't use the iCloud mail feature.

But all the other features such as backing up data and game saves and everything else will work fine with just an apple ID?

I also use gmail for mail calendar and contacts (both work and personal), so I just decided not to use those icloud features. Gmail and my "google apps for my domain" accounts already sync well enough on all my devices set up as an exchange accounts so didnt see the use of messing with apples services.

Everything else from icloud works fine.
