Phones eMail Apps Confusion?

I have a question about email apps; if i use a email app (for example, maildroid) to check my 2 emails, will the independent gmail app be running as well? and wouldnt that waste battery life, keep in mind that you cant log out of gmail for some reason, i researched it already, any advice or thoughts?

All I did was disable notifications for the GMail app and I have K9 controlling notifications for my GMail account.

I think if you go to the app info for GMail, you might be able to disable it. Not sure though, you can double check.

Haven't personally used Maildroid so I can't really say. But if you are looking to try it out, it is free. And the version straight from them is better than the one on the app store:

Just go into accounts under Android's main settings and deselect syncing email under your Gmail account, if you don't want to use the Gmail app.
