Email not showing Contact's name

On my iPhone running the latest version of iOS 5, when I go to view my Inbox for Mail, it shows the contact's email address instead of their associated name.

For example, my Inbox says this: "xxxxxxxx@gmail.com" But, when I open the email, it will show the contact's name, "Mike W.", in the "From" field.

Is this a bug or is something wrong on my end? (BTW, I've killed the Mail app and reset my iPhone).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not a bug. You can configure your email program to set the "From:" field like this:

"John Doe" <johndoe@sample.com>

Or like this:

johndoe@sample.com

The mail app on the iPhone, in the Inbox view, will display the text in quotes in bold as who the email is from if it is present If not, it will just display the actual email address.

When you view the email, this will happen:

1. If the email address matches an entry in your Contacts, it will show the contact's name.

2. If the email address does not match an entry in your Contacts, it will display the text in quotes if present. If not, it will show the actual email address.

The person is in my Address Book (in iCloud). So in Inbox view, it shows they're email address instead of their name. But, once I open the message, it shows their name (it's a custom name I have for that contact).

See below. And again, where it says "From" in the second picture, that is a custom pet-name I have for that contact (it's not the name that that person has associated with their Email).

How do I make it say the pet-name I have for the contact in the Inbox view? Or can this not be done?

Ok, thanks! I just wish email clients can configure into your contacts the way I described - but after doing research (looking at some Android phones/iPhones), they can't.
