Emails have disappeared from Mail inbox

All of a sudden all emails have disappeared from the Mail inbox – they’re still on iCloud, though, so they haven't been deleted. It looks a little like the message viewer is filtering the content, though the search field is empty – at the top of the message viewer it says "Inbox (0 filtered messages)". All emails in the Flagged, Sent and Trash folders are still displayed.

I’ve tried restarting the computer, but it made no difference. Any suggestions what could be the matter?

If you think that it's a bug, feed it to Apple.

Then, I guess that the rebuild routine for Sierra is the same as for El Capitan.

Thanks for your reply. I ended up exporting all mailboxes from a backup and then importing them in Mail on Sierra. It's working so far.
