emails not sending or receiving with phone "asleep"

I signed up for my trial of MobileMe and I'm using it with my gmail account (my gmail account is forwarded to my .me email address and my outgoing server is set to smtp.gmail.com). I noticed that if I send myself a test message from my work email address, my iphone does not receive it unless I wake it up first. Similarly, when I reply to that message it doesn't seem to get sent if the phone is asleep - the only way I can get the message to send is if I wake the phone up again.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and, if so, how can I fix it? I do have my iphone set to "push" so that can't be the problem. Thanks.

Is your phone checking gmail or mobileme?

If gmail, I do not believe gmail supports push right now. I believe the only mail services that supports push fully, is mobileme and yahoo mail.

If you are using mobileme, I believe there were some posts that push was not working for them, though was working previously. It seems its not 100% stable. Though I do not have a mobileme account, so I cannot speak from experience. Just what I have heard.

Also, you apparently do not need mobileme to do push, if you do not mind using yahoo mail.

My MobileMe is working fine. I am also forwarding my mail to MobileMe (however, not GMAIL but should not matter).

Also, your statement about "sending mail does not work while the phone is asleep". This is a bit confusing since when you actually sent the mail your phone must have not been asleep. Right?

Did you setup your phone with the MobileMe and then change the SMTP Server or did you use Other. Since you are having this problem I would delete the account and set it up again using the MobileMe setup and don't change the SMTP until all is working fine. Also, do you have it setup for PUSH on the phone?

outgoing trouble

Is anyone having problem with not being able to send email from their iphone through mobileme? Today it says that smtp.me.com:usernamecannot be found. It tries to send out the email often, but never does.

No problem here. I normally use an alternate SMTP Server but I tested with smtp.me.com and it was sent immediately.

Yeah, I didn't quite follow that either. If you phone is locked (which is what I think you mean by asleep) then you will only get notified of emails if they are push or you have setup fetching to something other than manual.

Check here...

Settings > Fetch New Data

First make sure push is on to allow it (should be by default).
Then scroll down and select 'Advanced'

Here you should see all your mail accounts and wether they are set for push (if available), fetch, or manual. Make sure the me account is set for push here as well. When an email is pushed to you, you will here a sound and vibration by default. Also when you unlock you will see the badge update with a number. If you have go into the mail program before the mails update then you are set to manual.

Check those things and let us know whats up

Sorry about that - I guess I wasn't clear enough with what I wrote. What I meant was that once I compose a message and hit "send", I hit the standby button to immediately lock my phone. The email were not being sent out when my phone was locked (I called it asleep but maybe that's not the right word for it).

Anyway, the problem seems to have gone away. MobileMe has actually been working great for me the last couple of days. My gmail is being forwarded to my ".me" account and it comes to my iphone very quickly. My outgoing server is set to smtp.gmail.com so when I reply to a message it looks like it's coming from my gmail account, which is exactly what I want. This is similar to the way I had my mail2web account set up but this is even better because it syncs my contacts, calendar and bookmarks with my MacBook without having to connect it via USB (I still connect it for backups, music, apps, etc.). Hopefully Apple will add the ability to do backups remotely as well - that would be great.

Probably not since there is a lot involved here and would take too long over a slow 3g connection (compared to a 2.0 USB cable)

You're right about that but I'm not talking about backing up your music, videos, etc - that stuff is all in itunes anyway. I'm talking about email, custom settings, etc. I don't know what exactly is backed up but there should be a way to back up email. If it's not over 3G that's fine, but I should be able to connect via USB and back up everything.
