emails won't delete on imac

running HighSierra on imac 2011 model, have trouble deleting emails the message I get :
An error occurred while moving messages to mailbox “”.
I guess the error has something to do with "". but I can't see where that is, looked at the accounts etc can't see "". anywhere, I need to clear out the inbox and can't. any suggestions?

Try creating a NEW mailbox with a similar name.
Can you move emails into the new mailbox?

I've had this happen before and logged out and back in of my account and it fixed it.

OK , All I want to do is Move the emails to TRASH(delete) I need to make more room for other emails.
I guess I cant make another Trash mail box?

tlaw had a good suggestion.
Try shutting down -- all the way off.
Then, reboot and log back in.
Still having the same problems?

Hi All, done all the above, still can't delete them, it's only the hotmail, Gmail is OK to delete"..
If I made a new folder on desktop for hotmail, then deleted the hotmail account from the accounts list on iMac would that get rid of the old emails, and I could use the shortcut on desktop for hotmail?🤔
