Emergency!!!!!!!!!! iMac is spitting out all disks???

Hi....I have a presentation this afternoon and of course I need to burn some files to disk...and of course when I put a DVD in it revs a bit and spits it out!!
I have tried 6 different brand nrw disks, and a couple I have burned...sometimes it wprks and I can open, and then it dosent!!!
I have resarted, shut down, checked/repaired permissions...PLEASE HELP...IM GOING NUTS!

Maybe it's just not hungry? Sorry, all joking aside. Try a different brand of disk if you can. My PowerBook acted up when I first got it and wouldn't accept certain brands all of the time. I think I just use Memorex DVD-Rs. Good luck!

My Mac hates Memorex. I use "Staples" and "Sony" branded disks.
You could try going to store and buying a bunch of different brands and see which one it prefers.

Maybe zapping the P-RAM would help... if you don't know how to do that it's apple-option-P-R at startup.

Can you put any other, non-burnable CDs or DVDs in there? If not, it's also possible that your drive is physically just screwed up... maybe it thinks something is in there, or the force-eject button is stuck. Try poking around in the force-eject hole with a a paper clip.

The last thing I would say is perhaps you could try unplugging it for a minute and plugging it back in (after you've shut down of course). Beyond that, I can't suggest anything.

This usually indicates a broken optical drive. Had the exactly same problem on my iBook, and needed to replace the optical drive. It is covered in AppleCare, though.

As for your presentation, if your optical disk is broken, put the file on the internet, then download it to the computer you're making the presentation on. Of course both computers would need to have Internet on them. You could use a USB Flash disk, too.

Thank you all...zapped the Pram...no diff...BUT... put in a CD (Memorex) and copied just fine????? My Mac didn't like Maxcell so I have been using Memorex....also went out and bought a CD/DVD Cleaner....well, I m stumped...got a month left on my warranty...would this be covered by the regular 1 year Apple coverage??

Do iMacs have a force-eject hole? A cd of mine got stuck in my professor's drive today when she was trying to eject it and she's having ITS come down to take it apart. If there is an eject button, please let me know so she doesn't have to go through the troubles. She's such a sweet old woman.

Yes there is. You'll need a toothpick or something similar. In the top right corner, theres a little latch to get it out. However, you'll have to look around to find it--and be careful not to damage anything.

You can also restart and hold down the eject button (or hold down the mouse button) and itll be forced to come out else the comp wont startup (unless you stop holding the eject button).

Actually, it depends on the iMac. I don't think any since the G4 iMac have one.

Since the G4? Those were slot loading. I'm pretty sure the iMac G5s have them, and I also think the Intel ones do. I did have to use this method before, but I can't remember which iMac it was on.

The iMac G5 and iMac core duo do not have a cd eject hole. I know. I have one.
As stated before, hold down the mouse button during startup.

Don't Assume Anything

Just a quick note, about it being covered by Apple. I had a mini, and after about 8 months, whenever I'd put a CD or DVD, blank or burned, or from a CD/DVD manufacturer (ie music CDs and movie DVDs,) the computer's fan would spin up incredibly loudly, the disk wouldn't mount, and it would lock up the computer. I couldn't even open Force Quit; often I simply had to restart the computer.

I called Apple, they charged me $50 for the phone call (which resulted in a complete erasing and reinstalling of OSX.) The guy said if it didn't work, they'd refund the money. Four telephone calls later (all free, thank god,) I was told they couldn't give me my money back, and the best they could do was have me drive to Denver (the neaarest Apple Store.) The guys at the store said everything seemed normal, one had the nerve to tell me I probably just made up the problem and he doesn't trust a customer's diagnostics because most customers "lie anyway," and I was sent home with my still-broken mini.

Apple chooses what they want to repair. Depite what their warranty is, they seem to not be under any obligation to fulfill their end of the deal. I did replace the mini, but I'm certainly still unhappy and very wary of Apple's phone and store support.

If I put in a burned DVD with Quicktime movies on it...it works....now the latest...if I put in a store bought DVD in...it works....but if I put in my BACKUP DVD I burned it does not work...I put Psycho in from my Hitchcock collection and it played,
then I put in my burned back up and it spit it out...now I know this was working cause I watchec the backup with friends last week ????????

That is weird. You computer must be possessed by an evil spirt.... Probable not what you wanted to hear....

Make sure you document this with Apple immediately BEFORE your warranty
expires.

Get an incident report number for sure.

Take it in to your local Apple Store ASAP with the problem discs.

Mid 2005 iBooks don't have them. I don't think any slot loaded Macs have it. Maybe your having hallucinations?
