I have emoticons on the iMessages beta on my MacBook pro, however those animated emoticons don't come up on the messages app in ios5. Is there a way to turn them on in the settings?

there is an app in the appstore called emoji icons that will install another keyboard full of what you are probably looking for

No, I mean, on the desktop messages app smilies like :) come up as a full animated smiley, without any 3rd party stuff.... If the desktop one had it I would have thought iOS would, but I guess not.

Smileys are not converted to graphics in the stock messages app in iOS. They stay as text.

There are 3rd party chat apps that do the conversion you are talking about. These do not interface with iMessage however.

the app like emoji icons i mentioned adds an "international" keyboard to the stock messages app so while you can't just put :) or whatever it is you want. You simply tap over to the other keyboard and choose the icon you want

Is it? I got the app shortly after the app store first launched and it's moved to all my devices as I've upgraded over the years. I'm jailbroken and use bitesms which I think has it built in anyway.

If I recall, there is also a jailbreak app that adds the smilies to the messages app. I don't remember if they are animated though.
