Do you have you applications within the Applications folder on your Mac?

Hi,

your apps and softwares are in :

/Applications, or :

/Applications/Utilities, or :

in the users' Applications folder (~/Applications)

I guess what is in your Trash is the files (.dmg, .pkg...) you downloaded and used to install your apps.

These files can be deleted (they are no longer used).

However, they are now useless if and only if you actually installed your apps in their dedicated folders as explained above.

Could you give some example of the files you don't dare to delete (name and extension) ?

You will need to copy the apps you want to your Applications folder (or somewhere else, though this folder is probably best). If you do empty your trash the apps will be lost.

How come you didn't use the Applications folder in the first place?

Edit* see above. Are these .dmg files?

If you have files in the Trash that you want to keep, take them out of the Trash. They don't belong there. Put them in another folder. That way, you can empty the Trash without worrying about losing anything you want to keep.

When it comes to apps, make sure you're installing them properly. If you've installed an app, it should be in your /Applications folder, so you can safely delete the "box" it came in (the .dmg or installer file).

Drag all the files with the .app extension into the Applications folder (do not accept any duplicates I would guess) and you should be good.
