I noticed that after I deleted a bunch of emails, they were all still in my trash folder, which I hadn't opened. I don't know if they are stored in Flash Memory or in RAM, but I deleted them all. If they are stored in RAM, it could take up some valuable resources.
 
I don't think they are stored in on the ram. Most likely on the main memory, when you look wt the breakdown on iTunes there is an other category which I believe is what email, contacts, and calendar utilize.

Did you manually delete them from the trash folder, or just the inbox?
