My wide thumbs must be hitting the microphone on the iOS keyboard (and anywhere else it appears) by accident a lot as I get this dialog box several times a day now.

You'd think that disabling Dictation in Settings would get rid of the mic or render it inoperable but I guess that's too logical.

Since this annoyance can't be eliminated by methods that make sense I've come up with some possibilities:

  1. Thumb reduction surgery
  2. Enable Dictation and deal with that annoyance
  3. Stop using an iPhone
  4. Find a keyboard that doesn't have the microphone

I should have posted a shorter thread and asked if anyone knows of an iOS keyboard that doesn't have the microphone on it.

You're saying even after turning it off and restarting, it's still there?

I just tested this and was able to remove it. I had Enable Dictation off (but Siri on) and the microphone didn't display on the keyboard. I used the Notes app to view it. I enabled Dictation and the microphone button was displayed. I turned it off again, restarted the phone and the microphone was no longer displayed in the keyboard.

I suppose there's trying the reset all settings option, which I'm sure you've considered, but I avoid that whenever possible.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't realize it wasn't supposed to be there!

My phone has been restarted many times and so forth but the stupid mic button persistently remained. I checked the Notes app and it wasn't there. Messages still had the button.

So, I enabled Dictation and checked both apps…mic button there. Disabled it and mic gone in Notes but still there in Messages. Enabled/disabled Dictation again and presto…gone from everywhere!

Problem solved…but I guess the question is: if the mic button is missing on the keyboard (and Safari search) when Dictation is disabled why in the world is there even a dialog box written for an action (clicking the mic button) that, if things are working properly, can't even occur? It makes my brain squirm.

Whew, glad to hear the pest is gone! I'm going to start using your phrase "makes my brain squirm." It's perfect for the major HUHs?? we encounter. 😆
