Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying an iPhone to use with my existing O2 contract as I get unlimited web access already and a 40% discount on the tariff cost. O2 have said they dont do retention discounts for the iPhone, not even staff discounts.

When I asked about using my current sim in a store purchased iPhone they said it would work but WiFi would not be enabled. Is there any way to enable WiFi on a standard contract sim?

Cheers,

Andy.

I think what they mean is that it would not include free access to the hotspots of BT Openzone and The Cloud, at places like Macdonalds, railway stations, etc, which you get free with an iphone contract. (You can get this as a bolt-on, by the way, an extra £7 per month.)

The iPhone has its wifi capability built in so it does not mean that you can't connect to home wi-fi.

You'll have to pay the Pay and Go cost for the phone by the way, which is £340-ish for the 3G 8Gb, £440 for the 3GS 16Gb and £540 for the 3GS 32Gb. Do the sums about whether it's better to get a lower subsidised price and a new £30/month contract.

Thanks for the reply.

I should say I'm looking at the 16GB 3GS.

I'm currently on a £35 contract discounted to £24 with unlimited data. I don't want to pay £180 odd for the phone on the 18 month contract and then £35/month, and really don't want a 24 month contract.

I'm due an upgrade on November 24th so I'll get another discounted tarriff, hopefully still around the £24 mark plus a new ericsson or nokia handset which I could sell on towards the initial iPhone costs.

I see tethering is an extra also, thats not good. I only use it when I go home to my parents as they don't have broadband. Best keep the old C902 also!

Cheers,
Andy.
