I am just posting to advise anyone buying a 2018 iPad Pro 11" or 12.9" to put it in a case that covers the edges. If you are considering buying one because you want faceID or Pencil 2, I would wait and see if they get redesigned to make them less fragile.

My 11" (always in a 3rd party magnetic cover case) randomly developed a 20 cm crack in the screen. Unfortunately there were some other unrelated marks on the soft aluminium edge, so the Apple store said no free replacement. Reading online, random cracks seem to be a thing, but you will only be covered if the rest of the device is pristine.

Looking closer at my device, I noticed the screen was curved at the power button end (see attached image), which could explain the position of the crack. It cracked when I used it in a hot environment, so perhaps the screen was always that shape and the tension became too much. I tried to explain this to Apple online but they are still not interested (even though I sent them photos and videos) because the initial store inspection saw other marks on the case.

So my further advice is check your new iPad Pro carefully and if the screen is not totally flat, get it exchanged.

I kept my 12.9 out of a case for almost a year
no issues, but I stopped pressing my luck and bought a otter box defender

Those cases are serious chunks of plastic but I hear they give great protection. Exactly what an iPad Pro needs if you are travelling with the device.

My 2018 launch day 12.9 is fine. Only in Apple Smart Keyboard or Folio. Always in my I padded Coach leather backpack. Crammed under countless airplane seats. Traveled full time all over the States and Asia. My entire team has them (some the 11 instead of the 12)... zero issues with bending. We did have one that had touchscreen issues and Apple replaced it the same day. Apple has already released a statement that the current iPads are built stronger that previous models. I work in pretty harsh field conditions with no issues. Of course with the right amount of pressure ANYTHING can bend. Apple Care makes these issues non issues. Take yours in to Apple and see what they say. They’re alway great help.

I just wish Apples Smart Keyboard would hold up as great as their iPads do.

Yeah, Apple's cases are woefully inadequate in situations where there's a drop in which the iPad hits a surface on its edge. Hopefully, when Apple finally releases an update to the iPad Pro it will not only be more durable but there will be first party cases that protect the edges. I'm not interested in an Apple Pencil so I don't need the edge bare.

My 3rd generation iPad Pro is as flat as it was when I bought it a few days after I signed up on this forum.

My 2018 12.9” looks as new as the day I bought it. I live in the US and have taken mine to Europe, India, China, Mexico and countless states here. I checked it for flatness when new and occasionally when I get home, but have since quit worrying about it. Since the project management software programming I do is all web based, it has replaced my work computer almost 100% on my travels.

I do get that the new style cases don’t cover the edges. But there are many on Amazon that do if that worries you. I use a cheap magnetic case from ESR unless I’m using the Smart Keyboard. I think it is easier to keep this one pristine because it doesn’t have that polished, diamond cut edge of the previous style. Those always seemed to get dings on mine.

So, yeah it sucks the OP is having screen issues and seemingly, Apple hasn’t helped. But, it’s disingenuous to say this style is more fragile or bends more easily and everyone needs to put their iPads in armor cases.
