encoding on DVDs that prevents ripping via Mac the Ripper or Forty-two?

hey everybody, i'm just wondering if anyone has experianced any trouble with ripping DVDs onto their mac due to any studio locks so that people can't copy/rip the DVDs, and if any of the ripping programs (Mac the Ripper, Forty two, etc.) can or cannot get around those...

Theres studio locks??? I laugh everytime I see the back of the DVD movie case say studio lock and my powerbook has no problem ripping it.

My problem is getting them to burn onto a DVD that is usuable. I've never had an issue with any locks though.

DVD bruning isn't a problem for me; i don't have a superdrive. i just dont want to buy a movie hoping to rip it onto a new ipod and be unable to even rip the DVD.

Usually the DVDs and CDs that have protection run a Windows auto-run file that hides the data part of the disk. This won't work on OS X, so you should be fine. It actually won't even work on Windows if you stop the disk from auto-running.

cool...so basically the lock thing only applies to windows, and only if you let it?

Pretty much. It's just another reason to be happy you're a mac user

Almost. Sony and Columbia hooked up and started encoding their DVDs with an ARccOS system to prevent pirating and this works on both Macs and PC. There's some software out there to get around it. Check MacTheRipper forum to get more info on it.

the forums say that MtR can get around it....i'm not sure though; do you know what DVDs this applies to?
