Encoding Questions

Hi All,

I'm trying to figure out the best method to encode content for apple TV. I've have content from various sources and have the following questions. Currently using a Windows PC with Nero Recode.

1. If a piece of content has a given bit rate and file size, what adjustments to frame rate need to be made, if any?

Origional File is
Resolution is NTSC 720x480
MPEG 2
Frame Rate 29.97

So with this as the source, what are optimal settings for an MPEG 4 HD File in Nero?

Maximum Resolution is set to 1920x1080- Does it make sense do use this profile, or should I use another? Assume this is DVD quality content.

File is currently showing 1mbs video quality. Does adjusting video quality to 2, 3 or 4mbs up have any effect in picture quality, or am I just creating bigger files?

original size is smaller than output? i dont see how u can make it better by increase the screen size. you can't manually make a non HD video HD, no matter how large the screen size u made it into

@ same bitrate, only codec and encoding process will make difference in final quality. H.264 with double pass would be good, but it might take u forever.

[your best option is to never transcode the material. Only if the material is higher resolution than the final output device (your TV) can display, then you can cut it down to match the final output.

However given that the AppleTV can't decode MPEG-2 you need to transcode to H.264.

Have you tried Handbrake? It is on Windows and Mac and has a very nice AppleTV preset for the transcoding. Although I turn on 2-pass which is off by default.

If you are transcoding from an MPEG-2 file (rather than a DVD VOB) then you may have to wait for Handbrake to do it for you, that feature is still in development/testing.

I really think you should make some small sample files and them test them with different settings. Then choose the best one for your specific content.
