Apparently this is a common problem. Backup somehow becomes encrypted when I never set a password, and I've tried every past password on my iPhone I remember without success.

I can't decrypt the backup and I can't do an unencrypted backup without that unknown password short of restoring the phone.

I can no longer walk around with an iPhone that essentially not backed up!

How do I manually backup my iPhone including call details and SMSes so that I can restore the phone and get a fresh unencrypted backup on iTunes?

i had the same issue when I backed up my iPhone 6s plus, before buying the iphone 7 plus. When I hooked up my iPhone 7 Plus to my macbook pro, to set up my phone like it was on the iPhone 6s Plus it asked me for the password that I never set up for the encrypted backup. I also tried several different passwords then I tried the password to log on to my MacBook pro and BAM it started to restore my backup onto the new device.
