I'm trying to encrypt a hard drive using Lion 10.7.2, but I am having some issues. I tried using Disk Utility in the following way:

1) Open Disk utility and select drive with the external hard drive size and name.

2) Click on the erase tab, and choose Journaled and Encrypted.

3) Hit erase, and choose a password.

4) Wait until hard drive is erased and encrypted.

I followed these steps, but Disk Utility keeps crashing in the middle of the process. Thoughts?

I don't have experience with this issue, but can you update to 10.7.5 and try again? It's possible you've run into a bug that was fixed in a later release.

Let us know.

I just checked, and it turns out I am running 10.7.5. I don't know what the issue is, but still trying different things.

Hmmm. Does it always crash at the same point in the process? At what point is it crashing?

It crashes about a minute after it starts the process. Time Machine opens up asking if I want to do a Backup, and then Disk Utility just crashes.
