I’m using Pages as my default word processor and I would like to know if password protecting the documents the same as encrypting it?

Will it only password protect the document only without any encryption at all?

If it does also encrypt it, then what encryption algorithm does it use? Will it use AES-128?

I’m referring to password protecting Apple Pages app. What type of level encryption it uses when password protecting the Pages app?

Does it use AES-128?

I’m sorry, I was not referring to the MacOS encryption used by FileVault.

I’m only referring to the Apple Pages app when it’s password protected.

Password protected documents in Apple Pages can be protected by setting a password for the document, which must be entered in order to open the file. This can be done as follows:

  1. Open the Pages document you want to protect.
  2. Go to File > Set Password.
  3. Enter a password and select the type of encryption you want to use (AES-128 or AES-256).
  4. Re-enter the password to confirm it.
  5. Click "Set Password".
From this point on, when someone tries to open the document, they will be prompted to enter the password. The password protection will remain in place until the password is removed or changed. Note that password protected documents cannot be edited unless the password is known.

Me neither.

Apple states in its support document that the file is encrypted.

While they do not explicetely say how, an educated guess is that it’s done like any other encryption - depending on the device hardware.
