Up until yesterday I could send emails from my very old @mac.com email address via iCloud. Today (after the clear update to iCloud), that option has disappeared (though my iCloud AppleID is still xxxx@mac.com). Anyone have similar issues? Would be sad to see it go.

I can confirm that my @mac.com has gone too.
I don't use mine so it's not an issue for me.
I am still getting e-mail TO my @mac.com, I just can't use it as an outgoing alias.

Strange. My other Aliases from before they were locked down still work, but the @mac.com is no longer an option.
Thats a bit worrying - I thought that @mac.com addresses would be supported for ever? what if you use that for a business etc?

You should never, ever, never rely on an email address on a domain you don't own for your business.

I guess keeping .mac around is not as aesthetically 'streamlined', not to mention some additional technical complexity. But keeping it around would still have been a nice gesture for those of us who were Apple fans before Apple was the juggernaut it is today...

I agree fully with you. I was thinking about this again this morning. If apple did stop allowing people that have had an @mac.com email address from using it and forced them to use @me.com then this would be a nail in the coffin for apple in the email market.
You just wouldn't be able to trust that you wouldn't have to change your email every few years, for example if they wanted to introduce @icloud.com or something similar with all the fun and games that that would involve in contacting people and updating your address etc.
I just can't see gmail, yahoo, or hotmail saying oh by the way you have to change your address that you have had for 10 years or so..sorry.
I have my own domain for my business but use apple mail and other accounts for some not unimportant things. Surely you must be able to trust that an email address will last almost indefinately

Agreed, we have no say in the disposition of the address, heck Jobs even said when he rolled out itools that your .mac address was going to be free, then he changed his mind and started charging, its back to be being free, but my point is that apple can do what ever they choose.
so really there is no point in using mobile me for your email and it is better to use your own domain name. i have my own domain for business but will prob move away from other email providers as time goes by. if it can be cut off at any time there doesn't seem much point to me
For some reason my @me address has stopped working. Saw the opportunity and bought my own domain. So whether my @me account has stopped working for good or it is just another glitch, it's goodbye to MobileMe for me. iCloud didn't interest me much anyway.
That all depends on what you use it for. Apple gives you a me.com (or mac.com) email address, use it for communicating with Apple. That way, you can be certain you don't receive all sorts of newsletters and other types of spam (from Apple) in your personal email. I have a GMail account for just that reason. I never use my personal email address to subscribe to any online service or the like. I use it for personal communication.
Do yourself a favour and use your business address strictly for business. Then register a personal domain and only use that for personal email. Some of your business contacts will spam you. Get a throwaway email address from GMail or Hotmail for other stuff. You'll be drowning in spam in no time if you use one address for everything.

For me, its been years and years of using my .mac account and as I stated, its my apple id so its fully ingrained which is why I haven't changed but if they change it on me, then there's little reason to stay with it.
I hoping that is what apple will see as well - that if they do change it on people then no one will want to use it as changing is a pain
I don't think anyone expects to see .mac domain expire, just that they'll disable email access for that domain.
I spoke to Apple support. The said @mac will continue to be supported, but that she can't help me fix the issue until iCloud exits beta.

It's literally ten minutes of work to keep it running, not worth the effort of fending off even one pissed off customer.
Even the old homepage stuff still partly works (although that will probably die with iDisk's demise):
