Endless update cycle

hello,

I downloaded the PB2 update from the App Store and restarted. The install process completed but now the app store is telling me there is an update for PB2 again. It shows the update in the previously installed as well. I downloaded it again and pressed restart but nothing happened. I have manually restarted the computer but it still shows an available update. Not sure what build number it is suppose to be.

About this mac shows build: 15A215h

Getting the same -

1. Gone to the store
2. Selected the update
3. It was downloaded
4. Prompted to restart
5. Presented with a dialogue saying 'Available updates have changed' with 2 buttons. "Cancel" and "Show Details" I press "Show Details"
6. The dialogue disappears
7. I press Update again
8. Go back to 4... and repeat

After first update, and a second restart, the App Store was telling me that I still had an update (as OP said). The build on what I had just installed was 15A215h (beta 1). Restart again, same deal. Ran a second download/update. The App Store is happy this time (for now) and not wanting me to download another update, but the build number is 15A225f instead of 15A226f which I am told is the beta 2 build. Do another restart, still the same build. I'm a public beta tester - did we poor slobs get a different build than the developers?

Update stuck at less than 1 minute remaining:

Still having problems with the update. I have downloaded the update 3 times now and restarted the computer numerous times more.

3rd time around it automatically restarted successfully after the download completed, but the update process took a very long time and has now be hanging for 10 minutes on less than 1 minute remaining. It shows a complete progress bar and a frozen mouse cursor. Not sure what to do - I guess I will leave it for an hour more (for what its worth) and then hard power-off if nothing changes.

To resolve - I bypassed the reset and restarted the computer manually, then went back to app store it seemed to complete the download and instal as normal.

The update failed:

The update remained at less than 1 minute remaining for over an hour before I did a hard power-off.
I then powered the computer up and the boot progress bar was near the end half instantly and then just hangs there.
After another long wait I did a hard power-off and the same thing happens.

I have now formatted the hard drive and will have to start at step 1 downloading and installing PB1 and then hoping that the update to PB2 works this time round!

The way the mac app store installs it is different to just running the installer pkg files. It's the other unnecessary stuff the mac app store tries to do that stuffs things up and makes it go a lot slower or grind to a halt.

So it is definitely quicker to install via direct links instead.

Try it and see for yourself. You'll be surprised how much better it is.

I'm currently running the package installer and it says 1 hour 40 minutes remaining which seems rather excessive.
I will give an update when it finishes.

Did you also install the firmware update?

FirmwareUpdate.pkg should also be installed as well as OSXUpd10.11.pkg (and preferably before OSXUpd10.11.pkg).

And did it really take 1 hour 40 minutes? Sometimes installer packages initially say it will take hours, but then only take minutes to complete. Such installation estimates are often wildly inaccurate.

I remember installing Yosemite DP1 last year and it said less than 1 second remaining - for about half an hour! Initially one might think it isn't working. But I decided to totally ignore this nonsense and just let it complete in it's own time - whatever that time may be. And it did.

So my advice about installation estimates is to ignore it!

No I didn't install firmware update. El Capitan is not running on my main drive and is not my main operating system so is it really necessary?

I'm not actually sure how long it took because I went away from the computer. But it took atleast 30 minutes and boot up took an exceptionally long time after the installation. However everything seems to be working alright now.

OK. Well I guess we'll never know. But I suggest you install the firmware update anyway. It should only take a few seconds.

And although the installer will not insist you restart, I suggest you do so anyway.
