Tangentially, I'm frustrated that somehow Apple dropped wired earpod in line mic support from macs since my M2 MBA doesn't support it... Not sure how much additional cost the combo analog digital 3.5mm ports were but those things disappearing were a net loss too...
…is this true for all M2 machines? [edit: h/t @dwaite for answering this—the following still holds, especially with @junior's response]

what a joke, even if it’s “just” on the MBA (yknow, their best-selling Mac). their profit margins are so damn high—that’s an absurdly minor thing to remove from what is supposed to be a PREMIUM product. (this has me salty with my oft-spoken-of M2 MBP purchase, which is otherwise an amazing product.)

anyway, love this concept. Apple will never release a new pair of wired earbuds/headphones again but it certainly brings light as to why that would be useful/better for the environment (looking at you, Lisa Jackson) for a multitude of reasons.

Okay. Seems a huge step backwards, but... So AirPod Pros are the Crocks of the ear bud market? Not surprised, but likely all of their competitors are too. Getting in them to service them is not going to be pretty. I wonder how Apple/anyone would get the batteries out of them to recycle the rest. Do they just toss them into a grinder and distill the remains?

The next big thing? Looks like that stupid Samsung commercial where they forgot that AirPods were wireless and showed iPhone users with all these wires. When in reality the iPhone could charge, be left on a charger and play music while you roamed around the house with no wires. Classic Samsung!
dunno about “roaming around the house…” my connection tends to start cutting off around the kitchen area when my phone’s in my bedroom. that’s a pretty hilarious gaffe on Samsung’s part though. 😂

this is something that’s always bothered me- no one knows what they do with post-consumer AirPods. they could just be contributing to more landfill waste with one of their best-selling products (if seeing them in tons of peoples’ ears is anything to go off of) all while continuing to shill their environmental narrative to us.

Profit margin, historically, has been a hard thing to judge with Apple products. I remember the stories of the 'special screws' steve jobs had to have in the Next systems, and the efforts they went through to insure that the chips were all aligned the same way. Such examples of OC behavior add to the cost of goods sold. And all of the engineering to eliminate fans, and the intricate manufacturing for some of their products. Some of which seem to be built using some kind of magic...

I bought a pair of Hey Dude 'shoes' (they are really overpriced slippers?) and after wearing them for a few days was struck with the idea they are just Crocks with fabric, and totally not recyclable. I felt some guilt too. But they are comfortable. I will wear them until they aren't wearable again. It doesn't deflect from their lack of recyclability, but will at least delay their replacement. I love Birkinstocks, and wear them until the sole completely disintegrates, after trying to prolong their demise for as long as I can. Yeah, fashion is hard on the environment. Think of trillions of pairs of 'yoga pants' filling landfills...

fair point—I’m still blown away by the sheer lack of noise coming from my MBP, I don’t think the fans have turned on once since I bought it.

I will say that Apple does have some of the biggest cash reserves (if not the biggest? too lazy to confirm that, lmao) in the world. I feel like they could make room for in-line mic support on MBs if they wanted to. especially while selling the most premium smartphone in the world that completely redefined the product category.

So I have to get tangled with wired headphones because Apple (and all major companies) are greedy scum? Reminds me of the recycling scam. It's not our job, it's theirs.

Hardware prototyping consultant Ken Pillonel has added wires and a USB-C connector to a set of AirPods, bypassing the need for its charging case.

In other words, he turned AirPods into EarPods with a USB-C connector

As of September, you just plug them into your USB-C iPhone. No case needed.

I would like to believe this, but I wonder if Apple really will allow reverse charging. Seems like it would be rough on the battery to do it a lot. Then again with a Pro Max iPhone and AppleCare battery replacement, might be worth it.

After re-reading your post and the original post I now realize you were talking about wired headphones. My brain totally refused to accept that concept. I guess they will release USB-C wired headphones now that I think about it.

Or maybe not. Maybe they will do reverse wireless charging and double down on the wireless aspect. If they really do go portless it would make sense.

Just get Earpods with lightning to USB C adapter?

I think this would have been better if it was done with Airpod pros. At least the pros have noise cancelling.

Or you just solder some cables to the charging pins and connect them to a powerbank… 🤓

So, did MacRumors really fall for this April 1st joke? Or are they in with the joke?
