I noticed many people are complaining about the quality of their 20" iMac Aluminum screen. The following are a few steps to enhance it:

1) First calibrate your screen to an optimum setting- Preferences/Display/Color/Calibrate

2) Install Shades from http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23370/shades and adjust to your desired brightness level

Shades will allow you to adjust your screen brightness and the impact is different to using the iMac's built in brightness adjustment.

If you can find an optimum setting, which I believe I have, the washout look and huge variability of contrast will be very much muted.

Hope it helps :)

I tried Shades, but honestly didnt see much difference between the built-in brightness control.
