Yeah, the App Store is mostly a joke. Then the good apps get buried while the fart apps rein supreme!
^ I agree generally with this, but if it is to work effectively, there has to be a better way to find categories of interest than the App Store currently provides. I have lots of ways to find what I want on the web. Not so much on the App Store.
The App's store used to have an option where I could select all Apps and then have them sort by their release date. They did away with that a long time ago, I really liked that option. Maybe it's still there and I don't know a way to do it.

The market dictates the apps.
If there weren't buyers, there wouldn't be sellers...
Because people are buying them.....
Are they? We have only been given a few reports about app numbers sold and profit. One of which was a fart app, yes. Beyond that, we really don't know.
Usually, in a market place, if something is not selling well, it is pulled off the market and/or the business fails. Have we seen apps being pulled off the App Store due to poor sales? Have we seen developers close up shop due to poor sales? These are questions we'll never really know because most app developers are amateur (its not their day job) and no apps are ever pulled off the store (well, some, but usually for other reasons) - they just clutter up.
What's going to happen when the App Store is so big that it's almost impossible to find the really good apps?
