So here's perhaps a ridiculous idea... I have a @me.com email address in mind that I think I'd like to use. I think it's available (though I'm not sure how to verify that). Is it completely outlandish to enroll in the developer program just to avoid the landrush on @me.com email addresses that's bound to happen when iCloud enabled Lion/iOS goes final? Is there any way to check the availability of an address now?

I downloaded the beta Lion a couple months back illegally(Yes, bad idea...) to try to do the same thing and every one I wanted was gone so I wouldnt even waste your time. Also had to reinstall Lion to get rid of the problems.

You can download the latest Lion 10.7.2 beta, which includes iCloud integration. Technically, you need to be a dev to get this, but the installer is floating around everywhere.
One you get the beta release of 10.7.2 installed, you can create a new iCloud account using a new @me.com email address from within the Accounts preference pane. You'll have to specify a secondary email address where a verification email will be sent. That's what I did, and I'm able to use the email account just fine.

I did this exact thing, problem was I wasnt sure how to get back on official releases from Apple and as you can see they are really taking there time with this release and the bugs on the one I got were just too bad so I had to reinstall Lion.
The newest version of 10.7.2 - build 11c62 - has no known bugs. It might wind up being the version that's shipped out after iOS5 and iCloud officially launch in a week or so. There are hints in the release notes that this is final.

Even though it's true that lots of MobileMe users have already squatted some of the better usernames for over a year now, there's definitely going to be some influx now that the service is going to be open to the general public. And your odds of getting a decent username without at least 3 random number appended to it decreases.

Just to update, I got mine. Just installed Lion and updated to 10.7.2 on a separate partition, made it, confirmed it worked, deleted the partition. After install (15 min), maybe a 10 min process.
