I've 'forgotten' and reconnected them multiple times. I am able to use them without issue on my iPhone. However on my MacBook they will show as being paired, and then disconnect within 5 seconds or so. I've also noticed that when I do pair them they don't play the sound that signals they have been paired. Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you reset the AirPods by holding the pairing button on the case until the light on the case flashes amber? If not, try that. FYI, this can take several attempts. The amber light should display after 15 seconds but it’s taken me 30 seconds in the past.

The MacBook could be the culprit then since they work fine with your iPhone. A restart would be my next effort. Alternatively try putting the iPhone in airplane mode and see if that helps. They might be trying to default to the iPhone.
