Is there any agreement on with mail program is preferable?

I just got Entourage with my Office X suite, but I have been using the mail program that came with my 12"PB.

Wondering what others think...

Much as I hate to sound like the M$ bashers on this site, but I find Mail to be far superior to Entourage for everything I do at work.

But then Eudora is a quantum leap ahead of that too :)

i think Mail is a program that's underrated, since they put the junk mail filter in it's pretty powerful but it's simple to use...

i find it handles multiple accounts in a very straightforward way...

i like entourage a lot better. I like the look and the organization. i also like having calendar and contacts all in the same place. it makes it easier to look things up and i just have entourage open all the time instead of mail, address book, and ical. its a perfect personal organizer.

though they're separate programs, i feel that apple is achieving nice integration w/ Mail, iCal and AddressBook. also available are nice benefits like syncing and pushing calendars & addresses to the web.

i feel apple's got a lot more in store for its own programs and as time goes on you may feel a greater urge to use them.

all that integration is already in entourage is. and its right at your finger tips. plus you don't have 3 icons bouncying around on your dock and a few more windows.

matter of personal choice, I like mail.app

its simple, straight-forward, fast and the logic for autocompleteing the email addresses you type in is really very good.

I don't like having them integrated because I don't use the calendar (I use a paper one, I'm a luddite), and so I don't like it being launched, but you can't really go wrong with either.

Unless your system has a really critical crash and you have very important email. Eudora and Mail use a very standard mail format that can easily be recovered in most situations. Entourage and Outlook use a proprietary format that is much less standard and more difficullt to recover

no doubt. i sort of buried my main point: those are the programs that work best w/ iSync, .mac, etc. i see apple pursuing more connectivity solutions and i'm not sure where, if anywhere, entourage fits in w/ that.

clearly, iCal, Mail, AddressBook are what apple will focus on for connectivity.

does entourage work w/ iSync? (it's not a slam, i honestly don't know since i don't use entourage)

I use eudora for OS X. I found that Mail was incredibly slow, so much that it was a pain to use. I have around 10,000 messages in my inbox. I like to save all my mail and be able to sort it to find old messages. Anyway, Mail is constantly scanning all these messages and filtering them, even though they have already been filtered! Eudora has plently of filtering capabilities also, but implements it much better. Eudora handles my mail so fast its not even funny.

I have not used Entourage, although if it is anything like Outlook, I would probably prefer it to Mail + Address books + iCal. I dont think the interfaces to Address book and iCal are the best, and I would rather use an App that integrates all three seamlessly.

mail.app all the way. i want to check mail and send mail. i don;t need all that other bloated crap. Mail.app is sweet simple and fast. Also it's intergrated into X nicely with attachment handling, etc. Entourage just feels like Netscape compared to Safari.

I use Mail just because it looks nice (pretty icons and everything :D), easy to use and cause its an Apple program

My $.02

To echo Oats, I got one word for ya'll: EUDORA.

I've tried all the email clients, and I can't see why anyone would use any other client. In comparison, they all feel klunky and windozish to me. Eudora doesn't get in the way...just does its job simply and beautifully. That's not to say it doesn't have features--its got TONS for those that want them. Everything else is slow, or at least gets slow after building up any substantial amount of email.

True, it costs $39(?) if you want the full-version with the ad box removed, but on my PBG4 the box sits way down in the corner and out of the way--never bothers me. You can also get the LITE version with no ads...seems like quite a good package with the necessary features and then some.

well, when i used Windows I was an Outlook Express user (Outlook was too heavyweight for me) so I use Mail.app now. I like it. I have 5 mailboxes, and it makes it easy to see all of them at once, or one at a time. I like Mail.app even more than OE now that it's got a kickass junk mail filter. (If you use Entourage, though, there's a free filter that works on the same principles. Can't remember the name, but do a versiontracker search on it.)

i use mail. i got the office party bundle with my tibook in nov., so now i've got entorage also. it's not a bad program, but it's spam filter is awful. i don't have a hotmail account (all my email is POP) so i have no need for entorage.

Mail.app. Trashed entourage when httpmail plugin became available for hotmail accounts. Mail.app is very good for light usage, like that of me with 5 account, my girlfriend with four and my sister in law with two. If you have 1000+ messages in a folder it gets a little slow and it's not very strong in different profiles for different accounts. But it works very well for all the normal features and the spam filter is time saving!

I'm having trouble now with a message "has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." I appears that my messages are not being delivered. Not sure, but it is very troubling.

entourage vs mail

although i believe microsoft to be evil in terms of business practices, some of their software is not exactly the worst. I have tried many times to work with Mail for OS X, and I just can't get things to work properly. Also, it is REALLY slow.
I have been using Entourage since it's first release, and I have never had any problems. I have about 15 email acounts that I need access to on a daily basis and 5 more that I check weekly. Mail constantly downloads messages that I already have in my inboxes and duplicates them while ignoring new messages. I really love apple and I use all of their ofther iapps, but to me mail just sucks. To those who say that Mail manages multiple accounts well, I just want to know how many you have.
