A friend of mine's son designed this website. Although the content seems sadly lacking I think the way he did the navigation menu with css is pretty nice (yes, I know the idea looks like it was copied from apple, but... he is only 11)

I'm very impressed. He did a great job. The only thing I would change is the color of the type on the buttons at top. The gray on green is sort of hard to read.

It's really a very nice site, doubly so since he's only eleven.

Glad you liked it... I'm not sure I know what you are talking about with the "gray on green" stuff though

Would you send me a screenshot, and I'll tell him that there is some problem with it... what browser are you using?

Overall, looks great.

• I'd work on trying to get the file size for that center graphic down a little. It took a while to load.
• The gray on green mentioned before I believe is in reference to the navigation buttons, and could use more contrast.
• Hovering over the navigation bar takes a moment the first time while it loads the image. One technique to reduce this delay is called CSS Sprites. You might want to take a look at that to see if it's something that can work here for you.
• The page validates, woohoo.
• I'd rework the navigation a little. When images are disabled the menu is totally gone. This not only keeps blind people from accessing the page, but also keeps search engines from being able to index the site.

... but I think it's pretty neat. I couldn't make something like that now, and I'm well beyond 11 years of age.

I think he means the grayish color for the text/ font is difficult to read when on top of the green; like so:

Personally, I'm not a fan of the slideshow. I'd like to be able to choose to view them all as thumbnails (that I could then click and see full-sized) or choose to play the slideshow.

And I agree with angelwatt in that the central graphics (in the "Pictures" tab) could be re-sized-- but not necessarily for time in loading, but because on a MB, I can't readily see the whole image! Not all users have higher res displays.

And this, I might be alone on, but the large areas of bulleted text (like on the "Global Warming," "Pollution," and "Other Issues" tabs), I wish that the bold and bulleted text stood out more from the non-bolded text. And I wish the spacing was... somehow different. It's easy for my eyes to jump to the wrong line, dunno if I'm making any sense, sorry.

But really, that's just me being nitpicky, it's a really neat little site.

From my sadly limited idea of his code with the navigation, it will display text over the image (like regular link) if one doesn't have JavaScript (and I doubt there are many screen readers etc that will have JS.)

AFAIK, the pictures section is some hastily put together thing with FLICKR and flash I'll talk to him about it though, too.

Yes, I think he should maybe make the content typeface some sort of larger serif? Thoughts?

Yes it does look like it displays the text, except on the Pictures link. Looking at the code it seems the div tag around it has a different class name than the others; it has nocss rather than nojs.

I think it's a nice web site.

I do think there needs to be a little more white space on the site because it kind of looks a little cluttered at the moment.

Very nice website.

Besides what others have already mentioned, I feel the "sorry we're closed" sign on the Articles page isn't necessary. The text already on that page is self explanatory, and the graphic makes it look less professional, in my opinion.
