I recently upgraded my non-jailbroken ipod to iOS 5.0.1. When I opened ibooks today, I found that any book that I had on there which wasn't purchased through itunes no longer loads properly. I deleted my entire library, 300+ books, and tried reinstalling them from my computer, and they still will not load. What is going on and how do I fix it? These would all be epubs that I've either converted with Calibre or downloaded elsewhere on the web already in epub format. I specifically purchased my ipod to be able to read on it and am extremely frustrated that the majority of my library will not load. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Melissa

Hi,

Do you get any errors when the books don't install? What actually happens?

If you Private Message me, I'll send you over a free copy of one of my published eBooks in ePub form. Try to sync that to your iPhone and see what happens.

RTP.

Hi Rod,

Here's the break down, step by step. When I drag a book from itunes over to my ipod, the computer does it's normal update/sync thing, but my ipod no longer goes to the blank syncing screen like it used to do. I don't know if that's part of the new update, and therefore normal, but it definitely is different.

Now, going into ibooks and opening the book I just transferred over. What I get varies from book to book. I've been seeing the following:

-For some books, I get a pink box that says:

"This page contains the following errors: error on line 2 at column 1: Document is empty error on line 2 at column 1.: Encoding error Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error."

And that's it. There is no below and it doesn't flip to any other pages even though it says I'm on page 388 of 390 at the bottom of the screen. The line number it says the error was on varies from book to book, but otherwise the message is the same.

-For some of the books I get a big blue question mark followed by about the first chapter of the book. Then it goes to the pink box described above.

-For other books, I get a garbled looking screen in lots of pretty colors.

-For yet other books, I get a title page that is smooshed in with the dedication and table of contents pages, followed by a yellow and then gray band that takes up about half of the page. Books displaying this actually seem to have some of the book text saved if you flip far enough past all of the weirdness. But then it goes right to the pink screen.

When I originally found this last night, I deleted all of the books from both my ipod and itunes, and reloaded them from the original copies I had saved elsewhere on my computer. I've read just about all of these books on my ipod previous to this, so I know they were fine before updating to iOS 5.

I have other reading apps on my ipod; Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Overdrive, and they are all working fine.

I'm sending you a PM, thanks so much for your assistance!

Melissa

Quick update: Out of curiosity, I tried uploading a book in pdf format to my ipod. It shows up on my ibooks shelf, but clicking on it to open the book does nothing at all.

Yes. It didn't make any difference.

OK - just to discount any corruption on your side, I've sent you a copy of my ePub.

You've made sure that you're on the latest version of iBooks (1.5) which is good. I would also make sure that iTunes was at the latest version (10.5.2).

BTW - are you running iTunes on Mac OS or Windows?

Also, if you haven't already done so, can you hard-reset your iPhone/iPod: Press and Hold the sleep/wake button, slide to power off, and then restart the device.

Check your email for the ePub!

Cheers,

RTP.
