If your identity was impacted by the Equifax breach the smartest thing you can do is freeze your credit report from all three credit-reporting agencies (Equifax, Transunion and Experian).

Apple Finance AKA iPhone Upgrade Program (IUP) utilizes Citizens One (Bank) who will use only your Equifax credit report in consideration for approval in extending credit for monthly payments. If you freeze your credit report right now you will have to unfreeze it prior to applying for the IUP. It's currently FREE (normally $10) to freeze your Equifax credit report. but only until October 11th.

Join me in requesting Apple open pre-authorization for IUP on iPhone X as soon as possible:
https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Here is what I submitted (use it if you like)

Subject: Please allow pre-auth early for new IUP (Equifax breach\credit freeze concern)

Message:
Greetings, in light of the recent Equifax identity breach and forthcoming release of iPhone X many of us would like to enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program ASAP so that we can freeze our Equifax credit reports while Equifax is offering it free for the next 30 days. According to https://techcrunch.com/2017/09/12/will-equifax-waive-credit-freeze-fees/ we have until October 11th, then it will be $10 to lock our credit report.

Respectfully it is in the best interest of your future Apple Finance customers who wish to purchase the iPhone X at launch and to make payments to allow us to go through the pre-approval process NOW. As I understand it once approved the Citizens One (Bank) will be able to charge on November 3rd when the phone is available to the public.

Please consider our request. TY

I think me checking my credit report every day is better than freezing your credit report. If really worried get the banks to change all of your credit cards.

We only know about the Equifax breach, I am betting there are many more. Any data our government has you can count on being out there for everyone to see. Many of the governments computers are still running Win95 and are unable to run decent protective software.

Checking the cards you have in your possession won't cover this type of breach unfortunately. Basically the hackers got the crown jewels of what makes you "YOU", so they can easily impersonate you and open lines of credit with your identity such as mortgage a house, buy a new car, open dozens of store cards\credit cards.. ALL in your name. Then you have to spend years proving it 1) wasn't you and 2)fix your tarnished credit record. It's time-consuming and expensive if someone steals your identity. If you freeze the reports that creditors use only you can un-freeze them. Each credit bureau will give a 10-digit code that only you can use to unfreeze your credit when needed. Unfortunately the credit reporting agencies charge $10 for every free and every unfreeze. I also have been reading reporting that Equifax is AWFUL to work with when you want to unfreeze your credit report. It's not timely unfrozen\get double-charged. Sucks they are the ones Citizens One Bank (Apple) are using to setup IUP.

My credit report would report anyone opening any new account. In fact I would be notified that an application for a car or house loan was initiated. Heck, my bank sends me a text of any transaction over $100 on ANY of my accounts. Checking you credit report, all three agencies, daily, is the ONLY way to be sure. I have no desire to freeze my credit. If all people who's information was breached froze their credit, it would bring the system to a halt. 90% of the population freezing their credit would not be very productive.

I have both credit and debit cards for the company with more than $100K+, in several, at any given time so it is important to me to make sure no one gets in them. Even if they did it is all covered but do not want to go though the trouble.

I would never dream of applying for credit to buy a phone or watch but I realize that many have to do so. A Citizens loan on your credit report is hardly a plus on one's credit.

I didn't realize there were banks that allow daily checks of credit reports. I used annualcreditreport.com and it is only free one time per year for each of the three bureaus. Checking it daily would be awesome. Which bank does this? I have a CITI card (Costco) that allows me to look at my FICO score as often as I wish for no charge, but not my actual credit reports from all three bureaus.

It would be useful if millions froze their reports.. it would engage companies like Equifax to have a better identity and proofing system to protect the people they are spying on. :) Two-factor authentication would help greatly. We have the technology! LOL

I pay a service to be able to access all three agencies as many time as I want. Your banks like Wells Fargo would only give you a personal credit score, your own. I am in business and it get a bit more complicated.

Like I said we all have little to hide as if someone wants it . . . . well it is out there to get. Equifax just admitted it while other will not. The world runs off of credit so freezing would only hurt the consumer in the long run.

I got 37 employees and each has to have access to my credit to rent cars, fly and buy materials. This is how business is done.

My CR's stay frozen year round through all 3 bureaus. I'll pay the fee to temporarily lift it when I need to, which happens maybe twice a year.

My existing CC companies and lenders can still pull my scores and reports through the freeze because I have open accounts with them.

Equifax does suck though.

I've read Equifax (even when not inundated with millions of angry citizens) has not always been timely unfreezing credit reports and double-charging people for freeze\unfreeze events. They seem inept to handle the can of worms they opened. It comes down to their IT people not patching a web server for a known exploit that was patched last March. :(
