Erase Data option to 10 Failed passcode attempts not working

I had done some numerous testing as I have the Erase Data after 10 failed passcode attempts like from the below link.

I had performed 10 failed passcode logon attempts on my iPhone and then it said iPhone Disable Please try again in 1 minute.

Well, I thought after the first 10 attempts, the phone becomes black and wipes all the data and then reboots to factory settings. But did this not happen even though I had enabled the Erase Data after 10 failed logon attempts.

Am I doing something wrong or is this another bug on Apple's part?

Yes I did. Now after the 3rd time I have to wait 15 minutes now. But still, the phone does not seem to be in wipe mode.

It should wipe data just after entering 10 incorrect passcodes. Instead, its giving only time intervals to try again.

You get to wait for 1 minute after 5 incorrect (different) PIN attempt. Then after another incorrect different one right after that you wait for something like a few minutes. Then after another one after that it's in the range of 15 minutes or so. Total being about 7 or 8 incorrect (different) attempts so far. Before you get to do an actual 10th attempt you would be locked out for at least an hour of not even something along the lines of a day. Basically it seems that you haven't actually gotten to 10 incorrect different PIN attempts.

The Erase Data after 10 failed attempts should erase data without these time intervals.

After the 10th incorrect different attempt it should do that. But to get to that 10th attempt there are increasing lockout intervals between each different incorrect attempt after the 5th one.

Since noone asked: is the phone jailbroken? That might have affect the functionality.

I have googled around a bit about this and I haven't found anyone that has actually wiped a device doing this. What I did find is variations of increasing time intervals between tries.

It’s probably a good idea that you commit your passcode to memory first before turning on the erase data option, or turn it off temporarily whenever you change your passcode to something else.

It’s probably a good idea that you commit your passcode to memory first before turning on the erase data option, or turn it off temporarily whenever you change your passcode to something else.

It sounds like a basic warning to drive home the point that you should be careful with the option and with your PIN as with that option enabled if you forget your PIN you could get into a situation where you could cause the phone to delete all the data on it.

Thieves who have physical access to the phone can plug into iTunes and grab data off of it with the Erase Data option turned OFF.

One has nothing to do with the other really. If you have a passcode set up then in order to connect to a computer that the device has not previously been connected to the device would have to be unlocked first so that it can be granted permission to trust that computer to access it. Otherwise a computer can't connect to the device (and thus can't get anything off of it).
