eReader with e-ink alternative to iPad?

I don't see much about ereaders here. I've got an iPad but it is truly hopeless in bright sunlight, and I read a bunch outside in bright light while camping, and want to avoid having to carry so many books.

I assume there just aren't any LCD-screened tablets that can do this well; from what I've seen the iPad is still one of the best, yet it's unreadable in many conditions I find myself in. I realize I sacrifice color in maps, illustrations, and details in books I may be reading, but hey, I guess I'll just have to do that at night with the iPad.

Any recommendations? I would have thought there'd be more, esp. maybe something just running Android that I could maybe use with some apps that would work with that type of screen, but so far it looks kinda limited.

I have a kindle for all my reading needs and use my tablet primarily for browsing.

The new Galaxy S tablets boast an AMOLED screen that would fair better in direct sunlight than your iPad. May be worth checking out if you don't want to have two devices.

If you want an eReader with e-ink then you can't go wrong with a Kindle paper white. You can find them around 99 on sale at various times.

You are going to find most tablets, regardless of their operating system are LCD. As the previous poster me tinned some new higher end tablets are coming out with AMOLED screen which would be marginally better, but nothing will compare to e-ink in sunlight.

Agreed. If you are in sunlight, no tablet is going to beat an eink Kindle. I strongly recommend one. I have had one for 4 years and love it.

Anybody know of an eReader that had access to the Google Play Store? I would get a Kindle if it wasn't for the fact that I have more than a few books bought on Google Play.

If most of your books are epub, you might be better off with either the Nook or the Kobo. They both do epub format. But, I don't know of any ereader that would let you directly buy books from Google Play on the device.

Or, you could use Calibre to convert your books to mobi and then send them to a Kindle. (Assuming there is no DRM to deal with.)

I have a Kindle Paperwhite 2 and it's great. Kobo readers tend to have firmware issues, but Nooks are pretty good (So I've read).

Someone made an Android ROM for some of the Kobo models.

MobileRead is a pretty good place to research them before buying, and get opinions from users.

I do have a few epubs, but most of my important books are in what I believe is a proprietary format called flyte. So the Kindle won't work for me in all probability since the app for that format is available only in the Play Store.

I used to have a first gen Nook Touch which I rooted and installed a stock Android rom. Worked great, but the Nook Touch died just over an year after I got it, which makes me hesitant to get another.

I keep hoping that some one will make an eink reader with stock Android on it.
