I just bought an iPhone 3G off of eBay. It was freshly restored but the guy told me it was at firmware 2.1. So, I'm trying to restore it with 3.1.2 and I keep getting error 1015. I tried in recovery mode and dfu mode and on 2 different computers, mac and windows.

Any ideas? Thanks

Okay, whatever they "guy" told you, did you check to see what firmware and baseband you had before trying to restore it? I'm thinking he had it at 3.1.3, which is why you're getting the error. So, now you have to jailbreak it to get to 3.1.2 or below or you're going to have to restore to 3.1.3.

might be the case

I couldn't check the firmware version because it was "waiting for a correct sim" because I'm on T-Mobile... So I couldn't access anywhere on the device or through iTunes. So I proceeded to restore 3.1.2 and then this problem happened...

I've tried iRecovery and quickpwn 0.9.4 and nothing is working. Quickpwn seemed to get the furthest, but at the end it just rebooted the phone into recovery (not dfu) mode....That's where I'm at now...

IF he did put 3.1.3 on, then I'm screwed if I need an unlock, right...? Thanks

Yes, for now.

Anyway, use redsn0w to jailbreak (the suggested JB software for a 3G). Restore it to 3.1.2, and then check the baseband and you'll know.

I finally was able to get it working... I'm on 3.1.3 (but with Sn0wbreeze) so it DID NOT update the modem firmware, however, when I check the modem firmware it shows: 5.12.01 ... That's the one that's NOT unlockable, right? If so, there's no way to downgrade to 5.11.07 or do anything to get it unlocked now, is there?

Thanks again.

Nope, 5.12.01 is not unlockable at the moment.
Not much you can do but wait.

Why did you do that (I'm assuming you just restore to 3.1.3 and didn't jailbreak)? Learn patience, we were answering you as quick as possible, I think. Oh well.

Read above:

I used sn0wbreeze to update to 3.1.3. When you use sn0wbreeze, it acts like Pwnage and DOES NOT update the modem........... meaning, the phone was at the 05.12.01 modem firmware already before I did that...

Maybe thats why he sold it too:)
Too many people "accidently" updated their unlocked iphones.

Yeah, but the buyer wanted a phone he could unlock, which is the only reason he bought it. That's fraud. I don't do Ebay, just for this reason, unless I'm buying from a reputable seller, but I'd call/email Ebay and see what can be done.

@legaleye3000

If you paid with PayPal and the seller mis-advertised the phone, you have 45 days to file a claim.

But now that you have "changed" it, I don't know how you would prove it ??

I just emailed him and I am also filing a claim right now.

I didn't change it because it was always on 05.12.01 since I got it.

I hear you.
My friend last week received a 16GB 3G that was advertised as a 16GB 3GS model on ebay.
The seller told him to just plug it to itunes and update it and it will turn into a 3GS.
WTF? :D
lol

How could he prove it in the first place? Maybe with a video? Too late for that though.

I just noticed the OP's user name has "legal" in it.

Yes, not 100% sure if the seller was a scumbag or really clueless though.
The AT&T told rep supposedly told him that if you plug it to itunes it will be a 3GS or something :D
Needles to say he's sending it back and getting a refund.

Did you hear about the guy in the 1600's who said if he gave you lead it would turn to gold after putting certain chemicals on it? :D
