Error 36, Files Won't Copy

Hello,

I'm writing this hoping that someone has any technical advice to give me, because I am stumped and google is not much more help.

At first I thought I had an iTunes problem. I was trying to sync some files to my iPod and kept getting a "cannot be read from or written to" error (before I upgraded it said the disc or iPod could not be read from, after the new iTunes upgrade it says the file cannot be read from).

Anyway, I was sure that I was still an iTunes issue. However for an unrelated issue I ended up copying the file from my iTunes library to my desktop and I received this error.

"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “filename” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)"

It gets to 499mb out of 2gb before stopping, after repairing my hard drives (according to disc utility they are all okay) and restarting it got to 511mb before stopping and displaying this error message. The file is not corrupt as it plays fine in iTunes and VLC.

Is there anything I can do to fix this, to move this file and to get it onto my iPod?

I get this trying to move my iPhoto library from one drive to another. It's been a long time and I've never found a solution, I was actually looking for my old post when I found yours. I really would like to find a fix.

Try ddrescue. It repairs damaged files. With my iPhoto I was able to copy it folder by folder. Folders with healthy files copied, however if there was even one damaged file the whole folder would refuse to copy. I had to go through the whole thing folder by folder and then use ddrescue to move the few damaged files.

Thanks. Still working on this, but so far so good. I found one bad file, it was just single JPEG. How does iphotomhandle just removing this file? Will that screw up the entire library because it's all in the iPhoto.Library?

If it's too a server

Check the server's user list (ldap/open directory) and the permissions. After upgrading to Yosemite I had some "bad users" in the privileges of certain shares.

Thanks for the help. I got it by using Reddkrytens idea, except I found one damaged JPEG and just deleted it. Everything seems fine now with the library on the new drive.
