Hiya, I'm proud to say I fanally own my first Mac, a Green iMac G3 400mhz with OS 9.0.4 . The problem is that when I go to upgrade to OS 9.1 it says decoding MacBinary II and seems to be extracting something to a folder, until it comes to a point where it gives me an error -36.
I've been using Windows PCs for years and I only have this because my Uncle's school was getting rid of the Macs for a new Windows network (I know, it's almost herecay).
Might it be something the school installed to stop pupils from messing up the comp?

Anyone got any advice?

EDIT: And every time I go to run this file it tries to extract something into 'Microsoft User Data' in my Documents folder. And I seem to have sorted the DVD prob

I would say get Panther or at least Jaguar on your iMac. I believe a 400mhz can handle jaguar. If you need a copy I would suggest looking at ebay. Im sure it is a few bucks and then you will be up to date with OS. OS9 is out of date and no new apps really exist on it anymore. If you want to have a good experience on the iMac upgrade the OS and ur pretty much set. Dont expect to do much more than browsing and typing tho.

I hear what your saying about OS X and I'll be getting a copy of 10.1 on there pretty soon, my dad's office has one unused license, so it looks like I'm getting it :) I'll upgrade that to Panther later.
As for my problem, it turns out that I had to copy the file and run it from the hard drive, not from the CD and I had to turn a lot of 'Extensions' (I think that's what you call them) off. I'm just running OS 9 for a few days, I'll probably get OS X on Tuesday

OS 9.2 is a pretty darned good system, still use it on my iMac G3-233 and it gets a lot done...
