Hi folks,

I've been in the beta game for a long time, know about IPSW's, DFU mode, restoring from a beta build to the current public build via DFU mode (do it every year), however tonight when attempting to restore my iPad Pro 10.5 from the latest iOS 14 beta build to iOS 13.6, I get stuck at our old friend Error 53 after the device gets midway through and hangs on 'Verifying iPad Restore'.

I remember way back, Error 53 was to do with third party Touch ID repairs etc and a version of iOS 9 was re-released to include a fix, with Apple stating the error was intended for internal use, not for customers. Yet here I am ...

I am using an old iMac, a 2007 Alu iMac running iTunes 12.8 (latest version my OS supports). Could this be what's causing it? The version of iTunes is too old? The iPad has never been repaired, I've had it since new for two years now and was restoring it for sale as I'm upgrading to a new Pro once this one has been sold.

As things stand, I'm now stuck in Recovery Mode, so would using my in law's newer iMac with a newer build of Mac OS and iTunes work via DFU mode using the IPSW as normal?

Cheers!

Thats usually the problem when it comes to these things, so yeah. Do you have a Windows PC with the latest version of iTunes installed?

No, however my Father in Law does have a far newer iMac than mine, so I'll need to head to his and do the DFU restore there. Need to start thinking about a new Mac myself, this one has served me so well, but it's now 13 years old.

So it turns out he’s only got El Capitan on his iMac, it can go higher but he’s reluctant to upgrade as he’s happy with how it performs. His system, that’s his choice and I respect that.

He does though have a laptop with Windows 10, so I’ll just use that to do the DFU restore and hopefully it works as normal.
