error checking for OS X updates

hi,
im getting this message when checking for updates
" an error has occurred
Could not load data from Apple's software update server "
im almost sure its related with messing in "share and permissions" of root folder, see this post https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1860919/ , bootcamp assistant is giving me this message also "Could not download the software due to a network problem." when trying to download windows drivers..
can i do anything to fix this (one last chance before a clean install)?!

hi, so there´s a new update of OS X, the app store even if it keeps show the message "an error has occurred
Could not load data from Apple's software update server" when i click updates, if i click again it shows the new update, i click to update and restart but the file are not being downloaded and nothing happens, i guess the machine can´t connect to apple servers, but i manually downloaded the update and tried to installed, the process went too fast so i checked nothing was installed, recapitulating, i can´t download updates from app store, can´t download bootcamp drivers from BCA and now seems i can´t simple install any update ..great

From your other recent topic in MacRumors Forums it's not clear (to me) whether you followed the advice to use Disk Utility …

hi, disk utility (repair permissions) didn´t help me ( ..well at least help me to make user folders private again ) , the problem i think is im not able to install or update any apple software and maybe downloading OS X software from apple servers, lesson learned, don´t touch macintosh hd permissions settings! Out of curiosity, and i know won´t make a difference because settings were applied to all subfolders and files, what are the default macintosh hd permissions settings? Now i know i will have to clean install OS X i just didn't do yet because of bootcamp and reading online that some users lose windows after clean install OS X, im just waiting to have some spare time to do it ALL over again!

With Recovery OS there may be a menu option to repair permissions for a home directory (or words to that effect). If there's encryption – FileVault 2 – then it'll make sense to use Disk Utility in Recovery OS to unlock the volume before attempting that type of repair.

There's no simple answer. Technical points of reference include the following Mac OS X manual pages:

• pkgutil(1)
• repair_packages(8)

With the root of the file system
/
as an example, the following command may reveal a mixture of modes –

sudo pkgutil --verbose --file-info / | grep mode:\ 7

– in my case, with a variety of third party software on Mavericks, I see at least three modes: 700, 755 and 775.

You may wonder how OS X determines which mode is appropriate, for verification or repair purposes. Consider output from the following command:

/usr/libexec/repair_packages --list-standard-pkgs

In relatively simple terms

As far as I know: when Disk Utility attempts verification or repair of permissions, the application's use of the repair_packages command does not take into consideration everything in the database of receipts. There's a standard set; and if two or more packages in that set specify different modes for an installed file, then repair_packages will determine which one mode is most appropriate.
