My brother is having this error message pop up on his iMac and he doesn't know how to fix it.
From what he says, this error is preventing him from getting online.

He's both restarted his router and also disconnected the router for a few minutes thinking
that would do the trick but nothing changed.
It's an AT&T router if that helps any.

Can someone chime in with some guidance I can give him?

I saw this video on YT and was wondering if this would work?

Thanks

Have you checked the preferences? what is the connection status? Does the router work for other devices like iPhone / iPad / other Macs?

Maybe try turning wifi off and back on? or reboot the Mac?

Is there any chance that, somehow, his iMac has gotten itself a fixed IP address?

Are there any other devices on the network that might have a fixed address? If so (or even if not, because we don't know what the heck's going on) if there are other devices connected to the router/modem, then turn them off or disconnect, and try again.

Finally, he might follow the advice in the message: go to sys prefs, network, and assign his iMac a fixed address in another part of the 192.168.0.xx range, and see what happens. Maybe go way up in the address space, such as 192.168.0.111.

If that fixes the problem then at least he'd be online, and could troubleshoot.

It seems like I remember issues when trying to set individual devices to fixed, local IPs and that was probably due to the router not liking being told what to do.

What has always worked for me is setting the IPs on the router's firmware…often called "DHCP Reservations" or "Static Leases" on the router. Set them up one time and be done with it.

Very basic suggestion:

Power Down EVERYTHING:
- Mac
- Modem (to ISP)
- Router
- Other devices (phones, tablets)

Now, power-up things in a specific order:
- Modem (ISP)
- Router
- Mac
- Other devices.

Sometimes, this will "reset everything" and get things working again.
No promises.
