Not sure about the backup from time machine, but itunes generally keeps a few in reserve. As far as the error. Do a DFU restore. Instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808

Tried a regular restore and then a DFU restore - both give the same result "The iPhone "my iphone's name" could not be restored. An internal error occured."
So... does this mean that updating to iOS 5 just pooched my phone? I suppose it's time for a trip the the genius bar?
I wound up having to do a "forced" restore from backup. Took FOREVER, and I got a SECOND error message that Itunes had been interrupted - I did not touch anything! VERY unnerving. However, things SEEM to be ok for now. I did NOT allow the update to icloud yet, until the issues relating to MM are resolved.
BTW: my son also had an error during the restore of his phone. -50 I think.
Jeeeeeezzzz!
Yea, this has been a total PITA - I did manage to fix it by resetting the phone through the phone's Settings (not through iTunes) and then doing another restore from backup through iTunes. I'm glad it worked, it'd suck to lose everything I have on there!
