The iPhone is getting a hole punch display right as the MacBooks adopted the notch. I understand functionally why this decision was made, but it seems like a hole punch revision is inevitable.
I don't have an urgent need to upgrade but do want to replace my 2014 15" Pro within the next year or two.
I know only Apple can actually answer this question, but: based on precedent, when do you estimate the new MacBooks will follow the iPhone and adopt the hole punch?

I am 99% sure that the notch will be on MacBooks for at the very least 4-5 years. If Apple put a giant notch because they plan to add FaceID in a few years, the notch will definitely be there for a long time, as it will be harder for Apple to hide the components in the very thin lid of the MacBook. If they don't add FaceID, I can see them shrink it over time, but not before a few years. No matter what Apple can do, you're fine for the next two years, there's not even one rumour at this time about Apple planning to shrink the notch.

Thank you for the answer! Unfortunately I probably will be buying in 1-2 years.
I would buy one now but I thought I'd wait until at least the first or second revision so that all the first generation issues will be resolved and hopefully FaceID will be implemented.
Normally this wouldn't be an issue for me, but the notch is obviously a stopgap solution, and I don't upgrade often at all, so I would hate to be stuck with it. Definitely an easier pill to swallow if your 4-5 year projection holds true, but only Apple really knows.
