Ethernet Cable -> MBP -> iPhone

Hello all!

Soon I'm moving into student housing and will only have a possibility to use an ethernet cable to be able to use internet on my macbook pro (2018). Unfortunately I will not be allowed to bring any external devices such as routers or repeaters. My question is: Is it possible to connect my macbook via ethernet (probably with an adaptor to USB C) and then create a hotspot of sorts so that I may use the internet on my laptop?

You would need to get a USC type C hub that has Ethernet port on it. Since you can’t use a router, it wouldn’t be a hotspot. Hotspots are generally only used for mobile phones only.

Ok thanks. And how could I get my iPhone to use the Internet as well? Is it possible to connect it to my MacBook?

You can create a "hotspot" with your laptop and share the internet from your Ethernet connection.

It is really easy, but a few steps involved. I haven't done in in many years, so this is by memory on an older Mac OS, but it is probably the same.

1. Connect your Mac to the internet using the Ethernet connection.

2. Turn on internet sharing by Apple symbol> system preference> sharing> click on the internet sharing box then select share it from Ethernet.

3. Click on the Wifi icon at the top of the screen, and select "create network".

4. Connect your phone, or any other device to that network that you created.

I may have missed something, but I think it is as simple as that.

Hi again! I did exactly as you said, but now when I go to system preferences and select the 'share your connection from:' I don't find ethernet on that list. Just 'thunderbolt bridge', wifi, iPhone usb, usb 10/100/1000Lan, bluetooth pan....

I bet I know what is going on. You need to set up your Ethernet connection.

Go System Pref>Network
See if Ethernet is on the lefthand column, if not, click the "+"
Choose Ethernet as your Interface, and name it what ever you want and click "create"
Then go back System Pref>Sharing
See if "Ethernet" is an option in the "share your connection from" drop down

I am using an adapter. I tried googling a little and found something about channels... so I switched it from channel 11 to 6 and BAM it works. I have wifi on my phone now
What are channels though? and why would it work if I suddenly changed the settings from 11 to 6?

They are sub-bands within your main band, such as Wifi's 2.4GHz.

If there is problems on a particular channel, it is probably due to interference.

I am just not sure why it would not let you set up the sharing, even with the interference. If anything, I think it would let you set it up, but your performance would suffer and you might have drop outs.

Anyways, it is nice that you got it working.

I definitely didn't know about the feature until a friend who lives in the same building told me about it.

So far, sharing internet as a wifi connection with my phone has worked.... until it didn't. Every time I open my macbook, I have to play around with the channels (1,6,11) until it works. I have no idea why this is. Technically it works, but it takes me ca. 20 minutes each time to set it up. :/ Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.
