I've been running 3 MacPros (2009/2010) and all has been hunky dory for some time until a few weeks ago when I started to have connectivity issues with one of the machines. It wouldn't seem to connect to anything on my network but the other 2 machines could connect to it. A week or so later one of the others started to do the same, now all 3 three are it. None of them can connect to anything on the network and Safari takes an eternity to open a web page.

It seems to be related to something in the home folder(s). If I create a new user account and log into it everything gets back to normal. This is the case on all 3 machines. It doesn’t help much of course because everything I do on them depends on files in my home folder. Rebuilding all 3 of these would take quite a lot of work and even if I did I run the risk of the same thing happening again.

I'm wondering if my VPN (CyberGhost) might have had something to do with it. It has played up a bit (not connecting and using a lot of RAM Etc). I have removed it from al 3 machines now (using App Cleaner) but maybe it's clogged up some input buffers are something.

Any LAN experts out there who might be able to shine a light in my direction? Could really really use some help.

So I just updated from Mojave to Big Sur where on Mojave I was running the MLo 8.7 OC package since its release without issue. I updated to BigSur running the OCLP package and immediately I began having LAN issues. I then switched back to the Martin Lo package of 8.7 and I had the exact same thing. I opted to wipe my system clean and do a fresh install of BigSur with the OCLP package and it's doing the same thing.. same when I switch back to the 8.7 OC package.
I'm on a 4,1 flashed to 5,1. fresh install of BigSur, version 11.7.2. Ethernet info for the "Card" with controller being the built in Intel 82574L.
Kext name: Intel82574L.kext
Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/Intel82574L.kext
Version: 2.7.2

Haven't yet found a solution, but with the OCLP package I do have Wifi and bluetooth, so that's nice.

Big difference here is that LAN worked fine for a few months after open core install and it works when I create and log into a new user account. Ergo something in my home folder is screwed up. Also I previously ran OC Catalina for over a uear without Ethernet issues. Maybe your wifi card is the problem for you.

Nope! My Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work flawlessly, thankfully. There seams to be some potential issues after the 11.7.2 update for Big Sur which may be part of my problem.

Amazingly it was just a permissions issue fixed by repairing permissions on the system drive in recovery mode. In all the years I've been using these old macpros I've never had to do that before and suddenly all 3 of my machines require it. That's quite a coincidence. I suspect that the CyberGhost VPN had a brainstorm and screwed up permissions (they say that's impossible of course). In any event it's a relief to get my LAN back.
