I'm trying to share my Internet connection from my Mac Pro with a Powerbook but am unable to get a WAN IP address. I do however get a LAN connection on my Powerbook. The Mac Pro connects to the Internet just fine. I've had this working before but must have messed with some setting somewhere.

The Mac Pro connects (Ethernet 1) to a wired router which is in turn connected to a cable modem. The Powerbook connects to Ethernet 2 on the Mac Pro.
On the Mac Pro I have both "Ethernet 1" and "Ethernet 2" chosen as services. "Ethernet 1" has a green dot next to it while "Ethernet 2" has an orange one. Using two copies of IP Widget I can verify that I've got both a LAN (192.168.x.x) and a WAN IP address.

In the "Sharing" preference pane in the "Internet sharing" section I have configured it as follows: "Share your connection from Ethernet 1 to computers using Ethernet 2". A green dot is shown next to "Internet sharing: on" which I assume means it's working (or should be).

So what's wrong with my setup?

Hi,

I had a similar issue. You can't use both ethernet ports simultaneously for internet sharing. Only one can be used. For example, my Mac Pro was sharing its internet with the G5 via Ethernet #1, and when I hooked up a separate cat5 cable from Ethernet #2 to my PowerBook G4, it did not pick up an IP address and its dot was amber.. I guess its a firmware issue.

But from what I know is if you have a switch and or connect ethernet 2 from the mac pro to the switch and or router, that should allow your PowerBook to share its internet connection. In the end I didn't fool with it, so I got an airport extender and all my machines are now using dedicated airport for the network.

I got it working! And I'm able to surf the web on both computers at the same time! :) Strangely the dot next to "Ethernet 2" is still amber.

It was simple actually -I just entered my router's IP address (192.168.x.x) where it says "DNS server" in both places on my Mac Pro. I also did the same on my PowerMac G4.

(I have no idea why it's greyed out for Ethernet 1, nor why the real IP address (WAN) isn't shown anywhere except in my IP widget, but at least it works).

Airport?

Any reason why airport wouldn't work for your needs? I know on the PowerBook G4 the wifi signal is very weak for some reason. What PowerBook G4 do you have? Mine is the DDR2 model.

LAN INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING from macbook to iphone

Hi everyone,

I'll be travelling to japan soon. The hotel im staying at doesn't provide free wifi access, only LAN connection. I'll most definitely be bringing my macbook pro. Is there a way for me to share my LAN internet connection to my iphone using my mac? I went through several videos/forums and articles regarding this but still can't figure it out. Please help, thank you!
