Here is the scenario. If you feel up to the challenge continue reading let me know if this is doable:
I recently purchased a Macbook Pro, but I work at a high school that is primarily PCs running Windows XP. All the computers are fairly new, connected to a server in some mysterious location in the school. We are not allowed to connect a wireless router because it will "screw things up and you will not be able to log on".
I thought it MIGHT be possible to connect a USB wi-fi dongle and somehow share the connection with my wireless laptop.
I have tried "sharing" the network connection, but I don't seem to get a signal from anything.
Am I doing something wrong, or is it locked up on the server side? The reality is, I'm not supposed to do it, but if I'm not hurting anybody, I don't see why not. It would make my class a lot easier to teach if I had wireless internet, rather than dragging cords all over the place.
Any thoughts? Any articles anywhere that could walk me through a similar situation?
I am using a Dell running Windows XP as my office computer. I put a Linksys USB wi-fi wireless G dongle in the machine today. It does work, because I am able to play music wirelessly to my stereo (via airport express).
Need to find a way to push an internet connection to my Macbook Pro.
Thanks for any assistance.
