Have just acquired a Thunderbolt Express dock to preserve my ageing MacBook Pro. All seems ok, showing an audio interface plugged in and visible on my desktop. The problem is accessing 'Ethernet'. I need Ethernet for stability of music data transfer. Can anyone advise?

Wifi is working but Ethernet via Belkin Thunderbolt Express has a problem. In System Preferences>'Network: I select Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Thunderbolt dock), which is marked 'orange' and recognised as 'Connected' but with message "Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Controller has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." On The Belkin Dock the Ethernet light is green. I have tried renewing the DHCP lease, both with and without DHCP Client ID but neither makes any difference.

My setup: Macbook Pro. High Sierra 10.13.6. Belkin Thunderbolt Express F4U055.

I have been having similar problem, but was able to see that 2012 MBA could get Ethernet Connection from Belkin Thunderbolt Express, but my 2018 MBP could not (though previously did no problem). Not identical to your situation, but my approach may help...

Where somehow the Location wasn't picking up the Broadcom Controller in the Belkin dock not the connection I wanted to use.
Despite adding it repeatedly, nothing worked, until I read the thread again..
- Added a new location as Test..
- Added Broadcom Controller
- Set it to be tried first...
Hey presto it worked..
I was then able to add the Broadcom Controller to my Location of choice, and it still worked, and then deleted the Test location.

Hi and thanks for your post. I've now found the culprit. It was a faulty Powerline extender. I've now replaced this with a single 15m ethernet cable directly connecting the Modem to MacBook Pro or Modem to Belkin dock. Both situations work perefectly. Solved!
