iPhone Evasi0n Jailbreak Possible on New iPhone 4s 6.1.2 (not previously jailbroken)?

Hello,

I couldn't seem to find similar posts within this forum or others for that matter, which had the same scenario that I'm in, so I apologize if I have re-posted this topic.

I have recently received a new (or refurbished) iPhone 4s last week from Apple, due to water damage (thank you applecare+). I was instructed to restore this device from my iCloud backup, which kept the firmware at 6.1.2.

I would like to jailbreak this device, however the 'jailbreak prerequisites" advise to perform a 'Restore', which I believe would force me to update to 6.1.3.

*Additionally, I would like to 'Erase All Content and Settings' PRIOR to jailbreaking, to remove the 'Other' space within my iPhone. I'm aware that deleting text messages will help minimize the 'Other' space being used, but if I could start anew that would be ideal.

There's no need for a restore. You can go ahead and jailbreak.

it is safe to reset everything (content and settings) if you wish as long as you restore to a BACKUP afterwards - if you decide to set as a new phone it will upgrade the iOS - i think. it might not if you don't plug into your machine.

but again, this is not necessary to do this.


you can jailbreak as is.

also disable automatic updates in itunes.

@Troneas - Good looking out on 'disabling automatic updates'. You mentioned that it may or may not be possible to 'set up as a new device'. Do you mean that if I 'set up as a new device' OTA then I can start anew AND on 6.1.2?

If possible I would like to start fresh, but again I don't want to risk it because I know there is no going back, since this is an A5 device.


Side Note: I know once jailbroken, 'Erase All Content and Settings' is not possible, but what if I unbreak my iPhone? Can I perform this function with a formerly jailbroken iPhone that is now unbroken? I'm just curious for future reference.

@Troneas - Good looking out on 'disabling automatic updates'. You mentioned that it may or may not be possible to 'set up as a new device'. Do you mean that if I 'set up as a new device' OTA then I can start anew AND on 6.1.2?

If you remove the jailbreak by using the restore feature in iTunes you will go back to stock iOS. All features should work as if the phone was never jailbroken.

Yes, you would just have to put the iPhone in DFU mode then restore. Keep in mind you will be forced to upgrade to the latest iOS which is not currently jailbreak-able.

i've never restored by resetting the phone via settings so i am not completely sure if it will ask you to plug in your phone, to be honest.

if it does i would worry, since itunes is always gagging to give you the latest firmware.

still, the nature of the procedure is to put your phone as it was "out of the box", so this shouldn't happen. just watch for iTunes wanting to restore as new because that will upgrade your firmware.

and you should never reset anything via the phone once its jailbroken, even if you want to go back to stock. do a full restore via itunes. resetting stuff on a jailbroken device will give you more headaches than its worth.

@lukejc1 & PsstGreek - Thanks for the reply and the heads up that I would be forced to upgrade my firmware using that process.

@Troneas - I'll look into my options for this, because I don't want to get stuck where I'm forced to restore as new and update through iTunes.


1) When I received the new device from apple and restored from iCloud, I restored from a jailbroken backup. I knew that it wouldn't jailbreak my new phone, it was just the most current. Would this have any effect, should I choose to 'Erase All Content and Settings'?

2a) While reviewing my backups in iTunes (I found four), I noticed that one of the backups (under my first name, rather than last name like the rest) was 7.1mb. This backup name also matched the current backup on iCloud, except the file on iCloud states 'Incomplete' and is even smaller at 4.0mb. Does 7.1mb sound like a reasonable size for a backup of a 'New Device'?

2b) If I attempt to restore from the 7.1mb backup and the file is also 'Incomplete' will I have the option to retry from another backup of mine?


I know I'm being a pain with all of these follow up questions, so I greatly appreciate the help.
