The Land of Hope and Glory
So I've just downloaded the client for Mac OS X from their website and was wondering if it was worth subscribing? Any players around here?

I have played MMOs for a loooong time and all the recent WoWish ones have really put me off the genre being too easy. Is EVE different or is just a standard WoW style MMO nowadays?

EVE is not WoW. Very different gameplay and leveling system. Everything is in real time. Your skills progress even when you are offline. Very high learning curve. Get in a corp with friends if you can. Be careful, losing a ship sucks and it's really easy to do.

Hmm, sounds like my cup of tea. Thanks.

EVE is worth it if you like space

EVE is definitely worth it if you are a Space or Flying Sim lover. The graphics on it are very nice, but the only drawback that I see was if you are playing the trial version, you are kinda look at like gold sellers on WoW. But once you become a regular paid member then it's awesome. EVE Online is my backup plan if I ever get tired of WoW (which is happening) since it's kinda like the old Ultima days where you can just head out and have fun. Mining seems to be the most profitable way to get money up front, but be careful for those pirates. Once you get out of the newbie zone be careful and make sure you have insurance.

I tried it day before yesterday, made it about 30 minutes, then gave up. I just don't want to spend the time figuring out what the heck to do. I did the first mission they give you, checked my log, and it said it was complete, I took it back to the guy and he told me that it wasn't complete. I had homework to do and didn't want to figure out what the heck was wrong, so i just gave up on it. It looked like it had potential once you get higher level though, and learn your way around.

But then again, any game you have to pay monthly for is not ok with me. I thought wow was ok, I played for two months, but I don't think the game should be worth more than $30 a year.
Anyway, you can get a trial of EvE, which you probably know, because I think you have to sign up for a trial to download the client. Try it out and decide if you want to pay a bunch of investors so you can play a game.:apple:

Paying monthly for these types of games is fine as you get free extra content every few months, plus your just paying for bandwidth uses etc.

I've just done the intro missions, looks very promising but the problem with trials is that they never give you an idea of what the game is like later on. Hence this thread :).

Its so worth it. Whats so bad about having a fleet of your very own ships? Valuable gameplay although admittedly hard to get used to menus. Just watch out for those checkpoint guys.

I'm on day 5 of my 14 day trial period, and already on the first day of play I just knew this was a great game. Been stuck in WoW for two years and counting, I wanted something different (I still play WoW though, just not as much as I used to). EVE certainly is different.

I'm a total noob, there are tons of things that I am clueless about. Initially I was confused over the fact that I could not steer my ship with the arrow keys (as one would do with the chars in WoW). The learning curve is steep. I'm patient by nature, so I've got no problems with that. I'm always learning new things. There's also an in-game chat channel for Mac gamers (called "OS X").

Many Mac users have had troubles with game stability, but lately it seems to have been worked out for the most part. My experience is that stability is great - constant high frame rates (Mac Pro with 8800gt), and no client crashes. Until tonight. For some reason I've been unable to stay online for longer than 10-15 seconds, despite countless attempts. Last night I got some strange graphic artefacts - empty space was turned into a fuzzy square shaped box (but ships and space stations were normal). A restart of the game client fixed it. All in all - apart from a few technical issues, I can recommend EVE. Try it

Been playing it quite a bit recently and certainly seems like a good game. I think I have got the hang of the basics now, just trying to upgrade my ship a bit now.

Thanks for the help.

Cromulent -
As I'm sure you can tell by now, EVE is totally worth it. I've been playing for a little over two months now and I'm hooked beyond point of no return.
EVE is home to a little over 200,000 players, as compared to WoW's 10 million (i think?). The first thing I noticed that was really *different* about it, was the fact that it takes patience. Because of that, 95% of the population of WoW is excluded, and we also don't have to deal with obnoxious 12 year olds trying to bum gold pieces off of us. Not to mention it doesn't have as many spammers...
Also, if you're looking for some guidance, my corp, TKFT, is based in Niyabainen. Come find us if you gots some questions or maybe need a couple pilots to go mine/shoot stuff with...I know for sure that we are always looking for skilled players who are willing to learn.

Are there any dual platform types who can compare performance running the Mac client versus the PC client? Is the Mac client a good performer?
Thanks.

EVE pc vs mac

biggest difference that i've found between the two (after bootcamping xp and steam) is that the mac, despite your hardware, will not support premium graphic content. however, on the pc side, if you've got an MBP or something similar in power, you'll get premium graphic content. also, running EVE in a windowed mode is not an option on the mac side, but if you know your config files well enough you can get by.

an advantage that you have on the mac side is that you can run two instances of the same application, meaning you can run both your and a friend's account if you got the windowed mode thing down. best of luck.

I'd have started playing EVE already if only the Mac build had been a bit more 'native'. Don't like to be a complainer, but IMHO the port is really bad. If I recall correctly, it wouldn't even run windowed, which I consider an essential for this game.

I tried EVE, but the learning curve is so steep. It's not really worth playing if you're only planning on playing part time. You really have to sink a decent amount of effort into it, and for me it was just too much.

Too funny..

It's funny that this post went up. I'm actually cancelling my E.V.E. account today.. training for new skills was just taking too long. I have a friend that I work with who told me some of the skills he's training right now are taking over 30 days to train :)eek:), so he'll log in once or twice a month, and wait for it to finish before starting the next one. A far cry from WoW where a hard weekends grinding will get your character pretty high up.

I liked the game, just don't have time for it. Hope you enjoy it.

Wow. I had no idea they finally ported to Mac. Last I played was last August (Revelations II) and before that I did a trial during Exodus. Play when you have time to waste, though, cause grades have a tendency to curl up and die in the presence of this game with an addict at the keyboard.
I played it on my old PC. Best thing is, it was made in 2003 so graphically it isn't (wasn't) very demanding, though the visuals are spectacular for what it is. Also, the game is (was)(relatively) playable on 56k dial-up(!) But yeah, the learning curve is rather steep. I suggest going ALL the way through the tutorial. They've done a great job of making it manageably short (2-3 hrs vs. 6+ hours it used to take). But yes, there ARE INDEED SPAMMERS. Just many fewer than anything else out there. Mostly trying to sell credits, leveling services, etc. in personal messages and general chat channels. But they aren't too intrusive.
There are occasional griefers, but they prefer to hunt really big game in packs. Those who play know what i'm talking about.
The game takes a long time to do anything; but you can always be doing something else in real life while things happen in-game.
Anyone thinking about trying the game out should check out this.
Also, feel free to play the rogue and break the law if you're so inclined. You won't get banned, but be prepared to face serious vigilante justice if you do.

CONCORDOKEN FTW.

Looking at the site now, they've added quite a but since I've been gone!

You should try for yourself. Everyone has different preferences, so trust your own in this case.

Update to this - as of 10th March CCP will (if they get it ready in time) be discontinuing the 'Classic' client completely for both PC and Mac. There will be a Premium and a Premium Light. Up until this next release there never has been a Premium client for Mac.

Eve in windowed mode is very much an option on both Mac and PC and has been for quite some time.

Running multiple instances on the PC is no problem as long as you have a decent spec machine. My HP laptop with 4gb ram and a 2.4GHz processor managed very well running two instances.
Multiple instances on the Mac is less easy since it requires some fiddling with the App package and game cache files, but is still possible.

In other aspects - awesome game. I have been addicted since 2006 and have 5 chars on two accounts. It's well worth the monthly subscription.
Yes, the learning curve can be quite steep, but as someone else pointed out, thats half the attraction since it means that most of the players are mature and we avoid the WoW brats. And by mature I mean averaging 20 upwards - I've frequently met players in their 40's with families.
In recent releases the starting experience with tutorials and such has been drastically improved and the increase in subscriptions indicates the success of that. The game recently hit 50k concurrent users.
For noobs though it's well recommended to join a corp and get some support. You can get on as a loner but it's naturally going to be a lot tougher.

Can't wait for the next release !!

True and you know it lol

...as of 10th March CCP will (if they get it ready in time)...

"Coming Soon!®"

Seriously though, I came back to Eve and I'm hooked all over again. It's a lot better than it was when this thread was started, and even more so since 2006.
Some tips:
Mining and missions are good from the get-go, just be sure to complete the tutorial and starter missions before going any deeper (like buying a new ship). But once you can, you HAVE to get into salvaging, salvaging the wrecks you leave in missions (before going to the agent for your reward) will easily net you 2-3times the cash in salvaged parts as the mission and bounty rewards combined.

lol i found the game weird and unplayable.. i just didnt understand what the game was about, storyline, quests or anything.. after the first day i just deleted it and everything related to eve lol..

guess its true what everyone says about eve. High learning curve..

I have been playing EVE for a little over a month, and I love it. It reminds me a lot of the Escape Velocity series (I still play Nova from time to time), just with other people in it!:D

Come back on March 10th. Things are going to be very different—most new-player gripes are being fixed, and the rookie experience is going to be drastically streamlined.

Unfortunately, this may also lead to an influx of WoWtards with IQ's well south of 65 begging for ISK handouts.

I'm not a hardcore gamer at all, but I love Eve. Very open ended.

I'm just wondering how it will run with the new 9400m integrated card. I'm moving from pc to mac in the near future (I hope).
